CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team fell to Cortland on Saturday afternoon in three sets, moving to 7-15 overall and 0-5 in the SUNYAC. Cortland rises to 18-5 and 6-0 in the conference. Cortland won 24-14, 25-8, and 25-17.
Freshman McKenna Law (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led Oneonta with six kills, while junior Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) added four kills and two blocks. Freshman Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) had two kills, two blocks, and one ace. Freshman Addison Tanton (/) made eight assists and six digs, while junior Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior High School) grabbed 13 digs.
Cortland's Anna Pilkey recorded a match-high ten kills, while Jennifer Koestner added nine kills. Mikenzie Martens tallied four aces and 11 digs. Alexa Guedez finished with five blocks, and Samantha Rodriguez made 15 assists.
Oneonta started strong by using a 4-0 run with kills by Law and junior Sabrina Squicciarini (Manorville, NY/St. Anthony's) to take a 9-6 lead in the first set. Cortland tied, but a kill from junior Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia High School/East Greenbush) and a Spano block gave Oneonta a 13-11 lead. Cortland answered with a 14-0 run to go up 24-13 before Pilkey sent in the final kill.
Cortland opened the second set with eight unanswered points before Oneonta scored on an error. A 5-0 Cortland span made it 13-1, and the hosts held Oneonta to single digits.
Kills from junior Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) and Law put Oneonta ahead 4-2 in the third set. Cortland cut the lead to one before an Abby Stevens (Otisville, NY/Minisink Valley, Slate Hill) kill started a 2-0 span. Oneonta held a narrow lead until Cortland retook the advantage at 14-11. Oneonta tied following a 4-1 run, but Cortland closed out the set, going 7-1 to complete the sweep.
Oneonta returns home to host Oswego on Fri. Oct. 25 at 6 p.m.
