ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â In the first home game in over a month, the Oneonta men's basketball team faced No. 10 Oswego in SUNYAC play on Tuesday evening. The Red Dragons fell 77-59 and move to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference. The Lakers rise to 11-1 and 5-0 in the SUNYAC.Â
"Tonight was a tale of two halves," head coach Cameron Conover said. "They wore us down, but we have no time to hang our heads as we prepare for this weekend at Buffalo State and Fredonia.Â
The Red Dragons lead 9-4 following a triple from junior PJ Laidley (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Pembroke Pines Charter) and an inside jump shot from sophomore Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds). Oswego responded with a 10-0 run before junior Xavier scored inside to make it 14-11. The Lakers built their lead to 21-13, but Hill drained a triple at 8:54 to cut the deficit to five points.Â
Oswego's Jamal Achille responded with a trey at 8:38, and Hill scored the following seven Oneonta points to make it 26-23. Sophomore Javen Flowers-Smith (Atlanta, GA/Pembroke Pines Charter) hit a game-tying triple at 6:22, but Achille scored the following four points to regain the lead.
Oneonta used a 6-0 span to go ahead by two. Oswego finished on a 5-0 run, including a buzzer-beater three from Jeremiah Sparks to lead 35-32 at halftime.
The Lakers took an eight-point lead early in the second and quickly went ahead 50-33. The Red Dragons struggled to find their shot until a layup and three-pointer from Laidley cut the lead to 56-40. Freshman Mohammad Sylla (Bronx, NY/Darrow) scored a layup at 9:59 to make it 56-42.
Oswego ran away after that and led by as much as 28 points.Â
Hill recorded a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds. Castillo scored 14 points with four boards, and Laidley had ten boards, six rebounds, and two steals.Â
Sparks led Oswego with 17 points and added six rebounds and three assists. Achille scored 13 with eight boards, and Ahkee Anderson added 13. Cartier Bowman grabbed ten rebounds. Â
Oneonta looks to bounce back with a road trip to Buffalo State on Fri. Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
