Wrestling Places Fourth at Will Abele Invite, LiCastri Wins 197-Class

COLLEGEVILLE, PA. -- The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team finished fourth out of 17 teams in the Will Abele Invitational at Ursinus College, Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Carson LiCastri (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow High School) won the 197-division and was one of six Red Dragons to place in the top-eight. Seniors Kenneth Sauer (Franklin/Franklin), Max Yahre (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK), juniors Danny Poggi (West Islip/West Islip), Kennith Jackson (New Orleans, LA/), and sophomore Jack Ryan (Trumbull, CT/) joined LiCastri as top-eight finishers in their respective divisions. Oneonta secured fourth with 128 points while Ursinus College won the team event win 187 points.

LiCastri entered the tournament as the three seed and cruised to the 197-final with three pins and a major decision victory. He recorded three straight pins against Ursinus' Connor Fritsch (1:12), American International's Tom Caracciolo (1:41), and Keystone's Nero Bono (1:59). LiCastri advanced to the final with an 11-0 major decision over East Stroudsburg's Matt Richardson, then won the championship with a 2:16 fall against the Warriors Ajay Hiller.

Ryan and Yahre each placed second in the 184-division and 157-division, respectively. Ryan was the 184 lbs. one seed and started the day with two falls against Southern Virgina's Lincoln Trapp (2:19) and Utica's Gage Tedesco (1:47). He had a 16-1 tech fall and a 14-2 major decision to advance to the final, but had to medically forfeit the final.

As the two seed in 157-class, Yahre started the tournament with a 17-1 tech fall win over Scranton's Aidan Veirun and pinned Ursinus' Nicholas Rehfuss at 4:20. He defeated Nassau's Cornelius Jones with a 15-0 tech fall and advanced to the final after he beat the Bears Max Parnis in a 12-4 major decision. Yahre fell in the championship to Nassau's Kristopher Ketchum.

Poggi won his first three matches in the 133-division for a third-place finish. He scored a 22-6 tech fall against Southern Virginia's John Carlson, a 13-1 major decision over RIT's Justin Baker, then defeated Ursinus' Evan Shriberg with an 8-1 decision. In the third-place match, Poggi posted a 20-3 tech fall against Shenandoah's Sean Rinebolt.

Jackson was the heavyweight's seven seed entering the tournament and recorded two pins against Scranton's Christian Gillich (0:49) and, the invitational's two-seed, Western New England's Spencer Dickinson (2:35). He fell in the third-place match to Elmira's Darius Green.

Sauer was the five seed in the 174-division and started the tournament with an 8-3 decision over Wesleyan's Marcus Brown and a 15-5 major decision win against TCNJ's Jimmy Dolan. He went to the consolation side of the bracket and beat Southern Virgina's Tyson Hoopes in an 11-3 major decision but came up short in a 10-9 decision in the seventh-place match against Western New England's Tristan Julian.

The Red Dragons are back in action Saturday, January 20, for the New York State Collegiate Championships at Nassau Community College.
