ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Two second-half goals helped power the No. 6 Oneonta men's soccer team past RPI in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon as the Red Dragons defeated RPI 2-0. Oneonta remains undefeated at 9-0 and grabs its sixth clean sheet. RPI falls to 3-3-2 overall. Sophomore Ali Somow (Utica, N.Y./Proctor) scored the first goal and then assisted on junior Luigi Prosperi's (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) 88th-minute goal.Â
"There was nothing in the game, but Ali was the difference today," said head coach Iain Bryne. "He has that special quality to make something happen, and he's so exciting to watch."Â
The Red Dragons got an early look in the 6th minute when RPI goalkeeper Colin Such turned aside junior Luigi Prosperi's (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) shot. The Engineers countered at 8:18 with a shot from Josh Gaudiano, but goalie Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was there to make the save. The first half remained quiet, with both teams' defenses locking down shot attempts. Somow rocketed a shot at 22:00, but again Such turned the ball away.Â
In the second half, Hanna stopped a shot from Kyle Osbourne in the 48th minute. The Red Dragons scored three minutes later when the ball crossed to Somow and the right side of the RPI net. Somow danced through the Engineers' defense and slipped the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal to make it 1-0.Â
Oneonta held RPI to one shot for the remainder of the half and added a second goal at 88:10. Somow crossed the ball in front of the Engineers' goal, and Such was able to get a hand on it. The effort was insufficient as the pass went to Prosperi, who chipped the shot in from four yards out.Â
Hanna made three saves in the shutout victory, while RPI's Such had four.
Oneonta next hosts Brockport in SUNYAC play on Sat. Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. on Red Dragon Field.Â
