GENESEO, N.Y. -- In the closing minutes of their conference road match, senior
Ian Zingaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) connected with sophomore
Joe Holder (Greenwood Lake, N.Y./Warwick) for the game-winning goal and secured a 2-1 victory for No. 12 SUNY Oneonta men's soccer over Geneseo, Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 8-0 on the season and 2-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Knights moved to 5-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Â
"The wind was a factor, and it was a game of two halves," said head coach
Iain Byrne. "We never stopped pressing forward and were rewarded with the late game-winner."
Oneonta struck first in the 25th minute when sophomore
Ali Somow (Utica, N.Y./Proctor) received the ball at midfield, brought it down the sideline and into the box for a centering pass to junior
Luigi Prosperi (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) who used his right leg from 10 yards out for the goal. The Red Dragons got an unfortunate call in the 35th minute when a Knight was tripped up near the top of the box, however the official deemed the foul inside the box, setting up a penalty kick. Geneseo elected Justin Arilotta to take the penalty kick and was able to get past senior
Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) on his right side to tie the game at one. Â
Oneonta kept the ball in their attack zone for most of the second half, creating several chances to take the lead, but came up empty-handed early on. With time running out, the Red Dragons finally broke the tie in the 88th minute. Hanna cleared the ball past midfield to sophomore
Sam Rogers (Broadalbin, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth), who had a couple Knight defenders closing in on him, so he passed it to Zingaro. From 40 yards out, Zingaro sent a lead pass into the right side of the box for Holder. Holder got out in front of the defender to receive the ball, took a couple touches towards the net and nutmegged Geneseo's goalie for the score. Â
Hanna finished with a couple saves and Vincent Maronski had one save for the Knights. Â
Oneonta outshot Geneseo 15-9, while each side had three shots on goal, and had a 9-7 advantage on corner kicks over the Knights. Â
The Red Dragons are back in action Wednesday for a non-conference match against RPI at 4 pm.Â
