ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â Sophomore Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) recorded a brace on the way to Oneonta women's soccer's 2-0 win over Potsdam to begin SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons remain unbeaten at 4-0-2 and 1-0 in the conference, while the Bears fall to 2-3-0 and 0-1 in the SUNYAC.Â
The Red Dragons took less than two minutes to strike, as fifth-year Joie Tortorice (Melville, NY/Walt Whitman) found Ring from the midfield. Ring crossed to the right side of the Potsdam goal and was one-on-one with the Bears' goalkeepers when she kicked the ball back for the opening goal at 1:39.Â
Oneonta's defense limited Potsdam to two shots in the first half and continued to fight on the offensive side. Potsdam goalie Savannah Bowie turned aside two quick tries from freshman Keira Dashnow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) in the 24th minute. Then senior Gianna Gritzmacher (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) fired a shot on goal at 36:57. Potsdam's Emma Wilson attempted in the 38th minute. Still, Oneonta goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) made the save to keep the Bears off the board.Â
Potsdam had a few more chances in the second half, but some offsides calls helped prevent any scoring. Meehan stopped a shot from Julia Tycott in the 53rd minute, and Oneonta countered when junior Brooke Matura (Northport, NY/Northport) nearly scored from close range.Â
The Red Dragons scored again when the Bears' goalie came to fall out to secure a loose ball, and Ring got there first. She cruised past the goalie and walked the ball into the open net for her fifth goal of the season.Â
Oneonta outshot Potsdam 12-5 and held a 4-1 corner kick advantage. Meehan recorded the shutout with three saves, while Bowie had six stops for the Bears.Â
Oneonta next hosts Geneseo on Sat. Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. on Red Dragon Field.Â
