Red Dragons Fight to Draw with Knights

ONEONTA, N.Y. - With the fall weather in fall swing, the Oneonta women's soccer team battled visiting Geneseo to a 0-0 draw at Red Dragon Field on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons (4-0-3, 1-0-1 SUNYAC) offense could not find much momentum, but sophomore goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) had a stellar showing with nine saves.

Geneseo (5-1-2, 1-0-1 SUNYAC) nearly scored less than a minute in when Liv Raucci rocketed a shot from the left corner straight into the middle of the Oneonta net. Meehan made the stop, and the Knights responded with another attempt at 2:50 from Abby Foster that sailed high.

The Red Dragons had few chances in the first half, and the Knights' defense held them without a single shot. Geneseo made one more attempt from Lindsey Matthew in the 42nd minute that Meehan blocked.

Oneonta took back-to-back corners to start the second half but could not break through the Geneseo backline. Meehan saved another ball from Raucci at 53:18, and Oneonta got within striking distance on the counter. The Red Dragons drew a foul just outside the Knights' box, and sophomore Tara Nicholson (Bayside, NY/Archbishop Molloy) fired the ball toward the Geneseo net. Goalkeeper Mollie Collins grabbed the ball to keep it 0-0.

Geneseo picked up more after that, and Foster nearly scored after striking Oneonta's right post. Raucci shot on the rebound, but Meehan dived on the ball to settle the action down. Meehan made three more saves before the end of the half as the Red Dragons hung on for the draw on the conference point.

Meehan grabs her fourth shutout as Oneonta remains unbeaten. Collins made one save in the draw.

Oneonta next travels to Brockport on Sat. Sept. 30 for an 11 a.m. SUNYAC contest.
