SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's soccer team battled Union to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday evening, with first-year Keira Dashnow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) netting the Red Dragons' goal. Oneonta moves to 3-0-2 with the draw, while the Garnet Chargers go to 2-1-1.Â
Union came out of the gates hot by taking the opening six shot attempts. Ashley Sheldon nearly scored in the 22nd minute but struck the left post to keep it 0-0. Dashnow answered with a shot on goal at 23:19 that Union goalkeeper Rachel Berliner turned aside. In the 27th minute, the Red Dragons broke through the Garnet Chargers' defense when sophomore Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) passed off to Dashnow for the high center goal just outside the box to make it 1-0.Â
The Oneonta defense held Union without a shot for the following 12 minutes until Delaney McNinch scored a low center goal off a pass from Amanda Sgueglia at 39:45.
Union outshot Oneonta 9-2 in the second half but could not find the back of the net. Olivia Forbes (Conesus, NY/Livonia) stopped a shot from Hannah Sams at 56:09, and then Vanessa Jorgensen struck the crossbar in the 78th minute. The Red Dragons mustered one final shot when junior Kayla Schwizer (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) fired the ball high and center, but the Union goalkeeper made the stop.Â
Union outshot Oneonta 17-4 and held a 12-0 corner kick advantage.Â
The Red Dragons open SUNYAC play next when they host Potsdam on Sat. Sept. 16 at noon.Â
