Oneonta Women's Soccer Secures Mayor's Cup Title with 1-0 Win Over Rutgers-Camden

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's soccer team (3-0-1) downed Rutgers-Camden 1-0 on the final day of the Mayor's Cup to claim the title for the first time since 2019. Sophomore Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) was named the offensive MVP, while junior Kayla Schwizer (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) was the defensive MVP.

The Scarlet Raptors (3-1-1) struck first when Alyson. Petro attempted 4:34 that goalkeeper Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central) turned aside. The action slowed until the 23rd minute when senior Leighann Perciballi (Northport, NY/Kings Park) rattled off two consecutive shots inside Rutger's box. Goalie Kayla McKeever saved both to keep it scoreless.

Both teams traded shots, with neither breaking through. In the 40th minute, McKeever stopped a shot from sophomore Tara Nicholson (Bayside, NY/Archbishop Molloy), and then a Shannon Lowney (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) attempt sailed wide off the rebound. A yellow card on the Scarlet Raptors gave Oneonta a penalty kick at 40:31, with Lowney lining up for the shot. Lowney fired low and right, and the goalkeeper dived left to give the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Rutgers' offense was potent in the second and outshot Oneonta 9-0. Despite that, the Oneonta defense held in, with Meehan recording three straight saves in the final ten minutes to give the Red Dragons the win and the tournament title.

Meehan finished the game with six saves, while McKeever had three.

Additionally, freshmen Keira Dashnow (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) and Dominique DiOrio (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa), Ring and Lowney were named to the all-tournament team.

Oneonta plays its first road game of the season when they travel to face Union on Wed. Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.
