SELINSGROVE, PA -Â The Oneonta women's volleyball team opened the season with a challenging slate at the 18th Annual River Hawk Classic on Friday evening. Oneonta was swept 3-0 by host Susquehanna in 25-11, 25-21, and 25-15.Â
The Red Dragons fell behind 10-1 in the first set after the River Hawks' Brie Livezey rattled off three kills in that span. Sophomore Julia Reedy (Galway, NY/Galway) sent in a kill to cut the lead to 10-2. Susquehanna continued to pull away and kills by Ryan Roris and Katelyn Dugery made it 14-3. Oneonta pulled within ten following a pair of Susquehanna errors and a kill from senior Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson). The River Hawks closed out on a 5-1 run to go ahead 1-0.
Oneonta fought back in the second set and took a 3-1 lead following two straight Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior High School) service aces. Susquehanna responded with a 4-3 run and went up 5-4 after a Red Dragons' error. Davis and Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia High School/East Greenbush) blocked a Roris attack, and a Davis kill made it 6-5. Both teams traded points until sophomore Sabrina Squicciarini (Manorville, NY/St. Anthony's) sent in a kill to tie 10-10. The River Hawks went on a 3-0 run, but the Red Dragons answered with a 3-0 span with kills from Davis and senior Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills, NY/Cornwall). Three more ties followed until Susquehanna took a 23-19 advantage. Oneonta pulled within two before Susquehanna took the final two points.
Oneonta took a 9-8 lead in the third set before three consecutive Susquehanna points. Squicciarini knocked in a kill, and junior Layla Alt (Shullsburg, WI/Shullsburg) converted an ace to make it 15-13. A 9-1 River Hawks' run proved too much to handle as the hosts cruised to the final set victory.Â
Sophomore Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) led Oneonta with five kills, while Squicciarini added four. Sophomore Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) recorded three blocks, while senior Sophia Gerace (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) made ten assists. Junior Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) led the team with 11 digs.
Roris led Susquehanna with 13 kills, while Livezey had ten. Keira Roach dished out 19 assists, and Jessica Sack made 16 digs. Â
