ONEONTA, N.Y. - SUNY Oneonta wrestling senior Jacob Pine (Hoosick Falls/Hoosick Falls) capped off a stellar career by being named the SUNY Scholar Athlete of the Year for wrestling.
"I couldn't be prouder of Jacob and his accomplishments both in the classroom and on the wrestling mat," said Oneonta Director of Athletics Ryan Hooper. "He exemplifies what it means to be a scholar athlete."
Majoring in childhood education, Pine ended the season earning All-Region with a fifth-place finish at heavyweight in the NCAA Mideast Regionals. Throughout the season, Pine won the 285 lbs. division at the ECWC tournament for All-Conference honors and finished fifth in the NYS Intercollegiate Open for All-State honors.
Additionally, Pine was a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American for the second straight season, an ECWC All-Academic, and a SUNYAC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll recipient.
"Jacob was able to balance the training necessary for such a grueling sport like wrestling, along with the time and effort required for his class work, which is truly something special," continued Hooper. "We are very proud to have Jacob represent us as a Red Dragon. A huge congratulations to him on this amazing honor."
Pine finished the year at 28-10 in dual matches and won 7-1 in his opening match at the NCAA Mideast Regional. He then reached the consolation semifinals.
Pine will be the graduate assistant coach at Utica University next year for its new wrestling program.
