Softball Completes Weekend Sweep with a Pair of Wins over Geneseo

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team won game one over Geneseo, 5-3, before junior Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) hit a walk-off single in game two to win 7-6 and complete the sweep over the Knights, Saturday afternoon. Graduate Student Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) continued to show off her slugging power with two home runs, including the game winning three-run shot in the fourth inning of game one. The Red Dragons improved to 10-11-1 on the season and 4-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Knights fell to 8-9-1 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Game One: Oneonta 5, Geneseo 3
Geneseo recorded three runs in the first off an RBI single from Kaitlyn Schmitz and a two-run home run from Brooke Fraas.

Oneonta cut the lead to one in the bottom of the second. Hussey led off the inning with a walk and crossed home when senior Kayla Young (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) tripled to right field. Senior Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) brought Young in with a single down the right field line, cutting the Red Dragons deficit to 3-2.

Sophomore Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla) led the bottom of the fourth with a single just above the shortstop's head. After Hussey was hit by a pitch, Palmatier cleared the bases with a home run to left center, giving Oneonta a 5-3 lead.

Down to the last three outs, the Knights got two runners on with a walk and single. The Red Dragons made a call to the bullpen for sophomore Angelina Scalere (Ardsley/Ardsley). Scalere went three up three down, with a couple grounders and an infield pop-up, and picked up her third save of the season, securing Oneonta's 5-3 win.

Junior Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) (3-5) earned the win, pitching 6.0+ innings, striking out five, allowing three runs, two earned, off six hits.

Mattie Woodard (1-3) received the loss after she pitched 3.0+ innings, allowing five runs off four hits.

Game Two: Oneonta 7, Geneseo 6
The Red Dragons jumped out to three-run lead in the first inning of game two. Junior Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue) doubled down the left field line and crossed home off a Serena double to right field. Young brought Serena and herself home with a two-run blast over the center field wall.

Geneseo took control for a moment in the top of the fourth with a four-run inning. Rebecca Schwartz hit an RBI-triple and scored on Kaitlyn Schmitz's double. Fraas tied the game with a double down the right field line and touched home off a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom half of the inning, Serena hit a single to right before Palmatier homered to center field to regain the Red Dragons lead, 5-4.

The game continued to go back and forth as the Knights made it 6-5 in the sixth, scoring one run on a defensive error then another off a sacrifice fly from Schmitz.

With one last chance for Oneonta, Haley led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single. Serena then laid down a perfect bunt that allowed her to reach first safely and Haley to advance to third. As Haley was running towards third, the Knight's first baseman attempted to throw her out which allowed Serena to advance to second. Haley tied the game while Serena made it to third on a wild pitch. The Red Dragons loaded the bases with no outs on back-to-back walks, and following a fielder's choice, Hussey hit the walk-off single through the left side for the 7-6 victory.

Hussey finished game two 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI. Serena went 4-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice, while Haley went 2-for-4 and scored twice

Scalere (3-0) earned the win after pitching 2.2 innings, allowing two unearned runs. Sophomore Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) started the game, pitched 4.1 innings, and allowed two runs off seven hits.

Elizabeth Eberhardt (5-2) was tagged with the loss after pitching 3.2 innings, allowing three runs off six hits, and striking out four.

The Red Dragons are back in action on the road Friday for a SUNYAC doubleheader against Oswego starting at 3 pm.
