OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team split their SUNYAC doubleheader against Oswego with 13-4 game two win, Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons tallied 18 hits and had six players record at least two RBI in their victory as they improved to 11-12-1 on the season and 5-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Lakers moved to 7-15-1 overall and 2-4 in the conference. Â
Game One: Oneonta 1, Oswego 5
Oswego had two runners reach base off a couple errors in the first inning and later scored off a double steal and a sacrifice fly. In the second, the Lakers added another two runs when Madison Hoeflich hit a two-run single to right center. Â
In the top of the fifth, junior
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) doubled to center field and crossed home off an error to make it a 4-1 game. Â
The Lakers tacked on their final run in the sixth off a single from Ariana Guinassi.
Junior
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) (3-6) pitched the complete game for the Red Dragons, struck out three and allowed five runs, three earned, off eight hits. Â
Fiona Higgins (4-6) pitched the complete game for the Lakers, struck out 11, and allowed one unearned run off three hits.
Game Two: Oneonta 13, Oswego 4 (6 innings)Â
Senior
Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) worked a walk to lead off game two before she was brought in with a single from sophomore
Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla). Â
Oswego got the run back in the bottom of the second with a single from Kayleigh Farro. Â
The Red Dragons regained the lead with a three-run third inning. Nagel and junior
Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue) reached base with back-to-back singles then senior
Kayla Young (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) loaded the bases off a walk with two outs. Hussey brought in Nagel and Haley with a two-run single to center field, and Young scored off junior
Sara Cartier's (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) single through the left side.
The Lakers cut the deficit to two in the fourth when Tai Smith singled to center and scored Christina Kania. Â
In the top of the fifth, Oneonta made it 7-2 with another three-run inning. Serena led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a double from graduate student
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford). Both runners came in off Young's double to center field. Senior
Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) brought Young home with an infield single.
Oswego scored two in the bottom half of the fifth off a passed ball and a dropped third strike. Â
The Red Dragons put the game out of reach with a six-run sixth inning. Nagel and Haley started the rally with a double and infield single, respectively, before Serena hit both in with a double to left field. After Young and Hussey walked to load the bases with one out, Cartier doubled to left field and scored Serena and pitch runner sophomore
Sophia Mangone (Ardsley/Ardsley). The rally was capped off when Nagel hit a two-run single to center field in her second at-bat of the inning. Â
The Lakers got a couple runners on in the bottom of the sixth, but the Red Dragons closed out the inning with a fly out and pop out, forcing the Mercy Rule. Â
Haley finished 4-for-5 and scored twice, Serena finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and scored twice. Nagel and Fiori each went 3-for-4, Nagel had two RBI and scored three times, while Fiori recorded an RBI. Hussey and Young each had recorded a hit and two RBI. Â
Sophomore
Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) (3-3) earned the win after pitching 3.2 innings, striking out one, and allowing two runs, one earned, off five hits. Sophomore
Angelina Scalere (Ardsley/Ardsley) pitched the final 2.1 innings, struck out two and allowed two runs off five hits.
Oneonta is back in action Saturday at Cortland for a doubleheader starting at 12 pm.Â
