CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Cortland, Saturday afternoon. In an offensive affair, Cortland won game one, 16-9, and took game two, 9-1, in five innings. Oneonta moved to 11-14-1 on the season and 5-3 in the SUNYAC, while Cortland improved to 13-11 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
Game One: Oneonta 9, Cortland 16
Graduate student
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) recorded her 100th career hit in the top of the first with a three-run home run, her eighth of the season, which tied the program record for most home runs in a season.
Cortland tied the game in the bottom half of the first with a McKenna Barry single and a two-run Shannon Scotto double. Cortland added two more runs in the second off a fielder's choice and another Barry single. Â
Oneonta recorded three runs in the third inning to go up one. Junior
Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue) led off with a single to center field and stole second while Palmatier worked a walk. With one out, senior
Kayla Young (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) doubled to right center and brought both runners in. Freshman
Abigail Silliman (Rensselear, N.Y./Columbia) went in to pinch run for Young and crossed home on junior
Sara Cartier's (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) single through the left side, putting Oneonta ahead 6-5.
Cortland responded with six runs in the bottom of the third. They scored three runs on three separate singles before Barry singled to bring in two more. Scotto capped off the inning with an RBI-double down the left field line, giving Cortland an 11-6 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, they tacked on one more run off a Halle Wright double.
Oneonta cut the lead to three with three runs in the fifth. Sophomore
Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla) reached second with a double to right center and advanced to third while junior
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) reached safely on a Cortland error. Cartier brought Serena in with a single to left field before she and Hussey scored on senior
Adriana Fiori's (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) center field single. Â
Cortland closed out the game with one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth as Oneonta was held scoreless for a 16-9 final.
Haley went 3-for-4 and scored twice in game one. Both Palmatier and Cartier finished 2-for-3, Palmatier had three RBI and scored twice while Cartier had two RBI and scored once. Fiori and Young each went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Â
Junior
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) (3-7) received the loss after she pitched 2.2 innings and allowed 11 runs, 10 earned, off 11 hits. Junior
Angelina Scalere (Ardsley/Ardsley) came into relief pitch the final 3.1 innings, struck out one, and allowed five runs, four earned, off eight hits. Â
Karlee Weeden (5-6) pitched a complete game, struck out six and allowed nine runs, six earned, off 11 hits. Â
Game Two: Oneonta 1, Cortland 9 (5 innings)
Cortland put up three runs in the first inning then extended their lead to eight with a five-run third inning.
In the top of the fourth, Palmatier singled up the middle and was brought home by Cartier's single to the outfield.
Oneonta had a chance in the fifth to close in on the lead after Fiori was hit by a pitch and senior
Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) walked, but both runners were left stranded following a strike out and two foul outs.
Cortland made it an eight-run game in the bottom of the fifth off a fielding error.
Cartier finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and Haley went 2-for-3.
Sophomore
Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) (2-4) was tagged with the loss after pitching 2.1 innings, striking out two and allowing seven runs, six earned, off eight hits. Dionisio came in and pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed two runs off four hits.
Barry (4-2) pitched the complete game, struck out one, and allowed one run off seven hits.
Oneonta is back in action Tuesday as they host Union in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3:30 pm.Â
