Softball Falls in Twin Bill to New Paltz

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team dropped both games of their doubleheader against New Paltz, Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons moved to 11-16-1 overall and 5-5 in the SUNYAC after falling to the Hawks 5-6 in game one and 1-8 in game two. New Paltz is now 20-10 on the season and 9-1 in the conference.

Game One: Oneonta 5, New Paltz 6
The Hawks gained an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning off a single from Jackie Rometo then a fielder's choice, but the Red Dragons responded with three runs in the second. Junior Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) reached first off a bunt and stole second, before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt from junior Aysia Oliver (Brentwood/Brentwood). Senior Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) brought in Cancelleri with a double to left center and moved to third on junior Delaney Haley's (Levittown/Division Avenue) bunt. Sophomore Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla) scored both Fiori and Haley with a single to left center.

New Paltz tied it at three in the third off a sacrifice fly by Juliet Bernstein, however Oneonta retook the lead in the fifth with two more runs. With graduate student Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) on second, junior Sara Cartier (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) tripled to left center to bring in Palmatier, then crossed home on Cancelleri's single to center.

In the top of the sixth, the Hawks made it a one-run deficit when Rometo advanced to third on a passed ball and later scored on a Red Dragon fielding error. Down to their last at-bats, Sydney Bonewit started the seventh with a double, then Bernstein hit a two-run home run to center field to give New Paltz a 6-5 lead. Oneonta could not get the tying run on base as they ended the game with three groundouts.

Nagel and Haley each finished 3-for-4, with Haley scoring once. Serena went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Cancelleri ended 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Cartier and Fiori both recorded a hit, an RBI, and a run.

Sophomore Angelina Scalere (Ardsley/Ardsley) (3-1) was tagged with the loss after pitching the last inning, striking out two, and allowing two runs off three hits. Junior Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) pitched the first 6.0 innings, struck out three, and allowed four runs, three earned, off eight hits.

Jillian Harrison (2-7) got the win after pitching 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit. Lindsay Roman started for New Paltz and struck out five in 5.1 innings, allowing five runs off 12 hits.

Game Two: Oneonta 1, New Paltz 8
The Red Dragons went up 1-0 in the first when Cartier singled up the middle to score Serena, however the Hawks tallied five in the second to take the lead for good. After New Paltz scored on an error and a double steal attempt, Rometo hit a three-run double to left field to lift them ahead, 5-1.

Bonewit extended the lead with an RBI-single to right in the fifth then the Hawks tacked on two more in the sixth off a sacrifice fly and a throwing error.

Oneonta had opportunities to score when they had two runners on in the second and sixth innings, and with the bases loaded in the fourth but came up empty-handed.

Sophomore Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) (2-5) pitched the complete game for the Red Dragons, struck out five, and allowed eight runs, three earned, off 10 hits. Palmatier and Cartier each recorded two hits, while Cartier had an RBI.

Sydney Waldon (6-1) received the win after pitching 6.0 innings, striking out eight, and allowing one run on five hits. Harrison pitched the last inning and allowed one hit.

Oneonta looks to bounce back on Friday when they host Plattsburgh in a doubleheader starting at 3 pm.
