ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta softball team dropped a pair of games to Plattsburgh on Friday afternoon, with the Cardinals taking the first game 7-5 and then winning the second 9-6.Â
The Red Dragons (13-18, 7-7 SUNYAC) fell behind 2-0 after the Cardinals (20-8, 9-5 SUNYAC) scored in the first two innings. Junior Aysia Oliver (Brentwood/Brentwood) reached first on a passed ball, and then junior Gianna Cacellri launched a home run to left field to tie 2-2.Â
After two quick innings, Oneonta took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when junior Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) stole home to make it 3-2.Â
In the top of the fifth, Plattsburgh went down 0-2 before Rebecca Diller singled to right field to bring home a Christina Palmer run. Kristina Persampir struck a two-RBI double to retake the lead at 5-3.Â
Oneonta went 1-2-3 in their turn to bat, and the Cardinals added two more runs in the top of the sixth from a Kristina Maggiacomo double to center field.Â
The Red Dragons cut the lead to 7-5 when Cancelleri doubled home Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) and Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla). Maggiacomo finished Oneonta off in the final inning and struck out the last batter of the game to pick up the win.
Cancelleri went 2-for-3 with one run and four RBI.Â
Oneonta gave up seven hits in the first two innings of the second game and fell behind 5-0 to Plattsburgh. The Red Dragons bounced back in the bottom of the frame, with Palmatier leading off with a double and then scoring on a Hussey double. Hussey added a run on a passed ball before Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) singled home Sarah Paige (Fort Ann, N.Y./Fort Ann Central) to make it 5-3.Â
In the bottom of the third, Oneonta pulled within one when Serena doubled in Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue).Â
Neither side scored until the Red Dragons tied 5-5 in the sixth inning, with senior Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) hitting a triple to allow Fiori to score.Â
Plattsburgh put together a four-run inning in the seventh to complete the sweep, and Danielle Torres capped it off with a two-RBI single to make it 9-5.Â
Sara Cartier (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) doubled home a Hussey run to cut the lead to 9-6 in the seventh, but Oneonta's following two batters grounded out.Â
The Red Dragons had six batters register two hits, and Hussey finished 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.Â
Oneonta next travels to face Hamilton in non-conference play on Tue. May. 2 at 3:30 p.m.
