CLINTON, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team split their non-conference doubleheader against Hamilton, defeating the Continentals 12-2 in game one before dropping game two, 4-6, Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons had six different players record at least two hits in their victory as the team improved to 14-19-1 on the season, while the Continentals moved to 18-19 overall. Â Â
Game One: Oneonta 12, Hamilton 2Â
In the top of the first, junior
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) hit a two-run double to left center to put Oneonta up a pair. Â
Both teams tallied a run in the third and fourth inning. Hamilton's Alessandra Priante hit an RBI-single in the third and Charlie Quinn brought one in off a single to left field in the fourth. For the Red Dragons, junior
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) singled up the middle to score junior
Sara Cartier (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) in the third, then senior
Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) stole home during a double steal attempt with junior
Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue).Â
Oneonta made it 5-2 in the fifth when Cancelleri hit an infield single that allowed graduate student
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) to cross home. Â
The game was put out of reach with a four-run sixth inning from the Red Dragons. Fiori led off the inning with a single through the left side, then stole second and was able to advance to third on the throw down. Senior
Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) singled to right center to score Fiori, and after she advanced to second on a bunt from Haley, Nagel crossed home off a double from Serena. Hussey hit a sacrifice fly for Haley to touch home and Cartier capped off the rally with a double to left field that scored Serena, making it a 9-2 game.Â
Oneonta tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh. Following freshman's
Cailin Hall (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) walk and Haley's infield single, Serena homered over the left field wall for the final 12-2 score.Â
Haley finished 4-for-5, scored twice and stole two bases, Serena went 2-for-5 with four RBI and scored three times, and Hussey ended 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. Cancelleri, Nagel, and Cartier all recorded two hits, Cancelleri added two RBI while Nagel and Cartier each had one.  Â
Junior
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville)Â (5-8) received the win after pitching 6.0 innings, striking out two, and allowing two runs of eight hits. Junior
Angelina Scalere (Ardsley/Ardsley) pitched the final innings and allowed one hit. Â
Emma Tansky (6-7) was tagged with the loss after pitching 5.0 innings, striking out four and allowing seven runs off 12 hits. Natalie Beebe pitched 2.0 innings, struck out one and allowed five runs off five hits. Â
Game Two: Oneonta 4, Hamilton 6Â
The Continentals went up two in the first of game two off a fielder's choice and a bases-loaded walk, then extended their lead to four in the third off a single from Taylor Santulli. Â
The Red Dragons got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Haley tripled to left field and scored on a sacrifice fly from Serena. The next inning, junior
Aysia Oliver (Brentwood/Brentwood) and Cancelleri hit back-to-back singles then senior
Kayla Young (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) blasted one over the left center field wall for a three-run home run to tie the game at four. Â
Jordan Merklin gave Hamilton the lead in the bottom of the sixth with an infield single and Mikayla Worzel brought one more runner in with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-4. Oneonta got the tying run on base to start the seventh inning with two singles from Cartier and Oliver. After a fielder's choice got runners on the corners with one out, the inning ended off a groundout and strike out. Â
Haley and Oliver both finished 2-for-3, this was Haley's 10th multi-hit game in the past 14 games.Â
Scalere (3-2) was tabbed with the loss after pitching the final 3.0 innings, striking out two, and allowing two runs, one earned, off five hits. Sophomore
Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) started the game for the first 3.0 innings, struck out one, and allowed four runs, three earned, off six hits. Â
Tansky (7-7) earned the win after pitching a complete game, striking out four and allowing four runs off seven hits. Â
Oneonta is back in action Friday for a SUNYAC doubleheader on the road against Fredonia starting at 3 pm. Â
