FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team secured a place in the SUNYAC Tournament after they split their doubleheader at Fredonia, Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons dropped game one, 3-0, before they won game two, 14-6, improving them to 15-20-1 overall and 8-8 in the SUNYAC, while the Blue Devils moved to 6-28 on the season and 5-11 in the conference. In game two's victory, sophomore
Angelina Scalere (Ardsley/Ardsley) recorded her eighth career save to make her the program's all-time leader in saves. This was Scalere's fourth save of the season which tied her program record from last year for most saves in a single season.
Game One: Oneonta 0, Fredonia 3
Fredonia scored two runners in the second inning off a double from Amanda Eastman and a single from Allie Wandell. In the third, Emily Chelius made it 3-0 with a solo home run. Â
Oneonta had multiple runners get into scoring position but came up empty in each opportunity. In the second inning and fifth innings, the Red Dragons had a runner reach third, however both innings ended in fly outs. Graduate student
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) doubled to right field with sophomore
Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla) on base in the sixth, but Serena got tagged out at home plate to end the inning.Â
Junior
Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) (5-9) pitched the complete game, struck out five and allowed two of the three runs off five hits. Junior
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) went 2-for-3 with a double.
Chelius (4-12) struck out two and allowed five hits in her complete game.
Game Two: Oneonta 14, Fredonia 6
Junior
Sara Cartier (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) led off game two reaching second off a fielding error, then advanced to third on junior
Delaney Haley's (Levittown/Division Avenue) infield single. Serena brought Cartier in with a fielder's choice that got Haley out at second. Â
Fredonia answered back and scored four runs in their next two plate appearances. The Blue Devils tallied two runs in the first off a ground out and a single from Erin Cunningham, and another two in the second off a throwing error and another ground out.
The Red Dragons regained the lead after they went on a two-inning rally and recorded six runs to go up 7-4. Haley got the run started with a single to shortstop, then with two outs Palmatier was hit by a pitch to move Haley to second. Senior
Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) singled in Haley then junior
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) singled through the left side to bring in Palmatier. Oneonta loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth off a couple Fredonia errors and a fielder's choice for senior
Kayla Young (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) to hit a two-run double. Serena followed up with a two-run double of her own, extending the lead to four.
Senior
Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) helped add another run in the fifth when she singled to left field and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher when Fiori stole second. Cartier helped Fiori touch home with a single to right field. Â
The Blue Devils got the run back in the bottom half of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from Cunningham. Fredonia had runners on second and third with the tying run at the plate, but Oneonta called in Scalere who forced an inning-ending fly out. Â
The Red Dragons gave Scalere insurance with a six-run seventh inning to go ahead eight. Junior
Aysia Oliver (Brentwood/Brentwood) started the inning with a double to left and came in on a Fiori single to right field. Fiori rounded third and scored on a single to center from Cartier. Oneonta loaded the bases with two outs when Nagel singled up the middle and brought in all three after the center fielder committed a fielding error. Nagel scored the final run of the inning on an infield single from Hussey. Â
The Blue Devils got one run back in the seventh, but the lead was too large to overcome, and the Red Dragons came out with a 14-6 win. Â
Cartier, Haley, Serena, Nagel, Hussey, Oliver, and Fiori all had two hits in the victory. Serena and Nagel recorded three RBI, while Cartier, Young, and Hussey had two RBI. Â
Sophomore
Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) (4-6) earned the win after pitching 4.2 innings, striking out one, and allowed five runs, two earned, off eight hits. Scalere (4) picked up the save after pitching 2.1 innings, striking out three, and allowed one run off three hits. Â
Mack Celauro (2-9) was tagged with the loss after pitching 0.1 innings, allowing four runs, two earned, off two hits.
Oneonta wraps up their regular season at Buffalo State with a doubleheader starting at 12 pm.Â
