Red Dragons Wrap Up First Day of Cortland Classic

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Oneonta men's and women's track & field teams took part in the first day of the Cortland Classic on Friday, with both sides earning multiple top finishers. 

Starting with the 3,000-meter steeplechase, freshman Jarrett Deneau ran a personal best of 10:54.53 for tenth overall. Junior Joseph Ayala was 12th with a time of 11:56.55. 

The freshmen duo of Cameron Sands and Joshua Jerome qualified for tomorrow's 100-meter finals by placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Sands ran an 11.15, while Jerome crossed at 11.20. 

Freshman Owen Sullivan took ninth in the 1,500-meter at 4:09.94. 

Junior Sierra Basco (Albany, NY/Shaker) ran a personal best of 5:20.69 in the women's 1,500 for 16th overall, while sophomore Sabrinna Mena (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) was 18th at 5:25.61. 

Junior Ejim Nnate (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) came first in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a personal best of 14.98 to qualify for tomorrow's finals. Sophomore Sage Douglass (Pine Plains, NY/Stissing Mountain) also qualified by placing sixth with a time of 18.21.

Junior John Balk Jr. placed third in the men's 5,000-meter at 15:53.68.

Oneonta continued to have solid performances in the field events. In the men's hammer throw, senior Miles Moliterni hit a mark of 51.58 meters to earn third, and senior Jason Briscoe was fourth at 47.60 meters. The Red Dragon women took the third through fourth places, with junior Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills, NY/Cornwall) grabbing a personal record of 47.93 meters for third overall. Hannah Jackson (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) was fourth at 47.53, and Christina placed fifth at 45.32 meters.

Douglass threw a personal best of 33.08 meters to win the women's javelin. Junior Cliff Biehl tallied a personal record throw of 52.07 meters to earn a third-place finish in the men's javelin. 

Junior Michael Carey cleared 3.60 meters in the men's pole vault to take third overall. 

Freshman Chad Franklin hit a personal record of 6.88 meters in the men's high jump to take fourth overall. 

Due to lightning, the women's long jump and men's and women's 10,000-meter events are delayed until Saturday. 

Oneonta continues day two of the Cortland Classic on Sat. Apr. 22 at 11 a.m.
