Men's Lacrosse Outpaces Plattsburgh, 17-9

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team had 10 different scorers in their 17-9, SUNYAC victory against Plattsburgh State, Saturday afternoon. Freshman Jamie O'Neil (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) recorded seven points off five goals and two assists and junior Matthew Krieg (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) finished with a goal and three assists. The Red Dragons improved to 7-3 in the season and 3-0 in the SUNYAC while the Cardinals fell to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Senior Owen Vail (Massapequa Park/Massapequa), and juniors Evan Kelly (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) and Ben Konak (South Salem/John Jay) put Oneonta ahead 3-0 at 9:41. After Donald Woods got the Cardinals on the board, sophomore Matthew Mangels (St. James/Smithtown East) caused a turnover, cleared the ball and continued to run straight at the cage for the goal at 5:51. Woods scored his second for the Cardinals but the Red Dragons closed out the quarter with a couple goals. Senior Connor Gallagher (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) found Vail for his second goal, and Krieg dished it to O'Neil to make it 6-2.

Following an even strength goal from O'Neil, Oneonta was called for a few penalties in the second period however the Red Dragons were unfazed with the calls early on. Down a man, junior Ryan Nicholson (Smithtown/Smithtown East) caused a turnover and got it to Krig who assisted O'Neil for his hat trick at 11:26. At 6:50, senior Sam Haita (Stephentown/La Salle Institute) was killing the penalty time and as the shot clock was winding down, Haita wrapped around the cage, turned around and fired it past multiple defenders to give Oneonta a 9-2 lead. Michael Swift found the net for the Cardinals at 5:10 and eventually Owen Lorenzetti scored a man-up goal to cut the lead to five. With a minute left in the half, Oneonta called a timeout and drew up a play that led to Krieg finding the back of the net on his own with 18 seconds left, putting the Red Dragons ahead 10-4.

Junior Jesse AlfanoStJohn (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) intercepted a Cardinal pass at midfield and ran it back at the cage for the unassisted goal and senior Jack Dinnegan (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) scored his fourth goal of the season off a pass from O'Neil, giving the Red Dragons a 12-4 advantage at 10:00. Oneonta maintained the eight-goal lead heading into the fourth after both teams tallied two apiece to end the third. John Eiseman and Gustav Rugg found the net for Plattsburgh. Following Eiseman's goal, sophomore Steve Barikyan (Tappan/Tappan Zee) won the ensuing faceoff, recovered the groundball and scored his first collegiate goal, while O'Neil netted the final goal of the period.

The teams split the final period three goals aside as Oneonta was able to cruise to a win. Barikyan found AlfanoStJohn for his second goal of the game, Haita recorded his second and Krieg dished it to O'Neil for his 40th goal of the season.

Haita and Vail each finished with two goals and an assist. Junior Stephen Sommo (Floral Park/Floral Park) was 10-for-14 on faceoffs and grabbed five ground balls. Barikyan was 9-for-16 on faceoffs and tallied three ground balls to go with his goal and assist. Junior Harrison Boukas (North Massapequa/Plainegde) saved 16 shots for the Red Dragons.

Dan Clements recorded 20 saves for the Cardinals. Eiseman, Lorenzetti and Woods all scored twice.

Oneonta had a 26-23 advantage on ground balls and outshot Plattsburgh, 52-39.

The Red Dragons are back in action Tuesday when they host Hamilton on All College Field at 7 pm.
