OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team snapped their five-game win streak, falling on the road to Oswego, 11-8, Saturday afternoon. Junior
Evan Kelly (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) and senior
Owen Vail (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) each recorded two goals as the Red Dragons moved to 6-3 on the season and 2-1 in the SUNYAC while the Lakers improved to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
Off a failed clear attempt by Oswego, Oneonta found the back on the net first when freshman
Jamie O'Neil (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) dished it to Kelly at 11:23. The Lakers tied it up two minutes later after Max Brodman scored on a man-up opportunity. In the closing seconds of the first, Oswego cleared the ball, and called a timeout to design a play where Trey Jones scored with five seconds left to go up 2-1.
After O'Neil scored at 12:39 in the second, junior
Matthew Krieg (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) found Vail to give the Red Dragons the lead at 10:43. In the final five minutes both teams traded a couple goals, allowing Oneonta to maintain a 5-4 one-goal advantage heading into halftime. Senior
David Guest (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) assisted Kelly for his second goal before Vail netted his second, while Liam Sexton and Jason Dongelewic scored for the Lakers.
Junior
Jesse AlfanoStJohn (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) opened the second half with a successful clear attempt and took it to the cage himself, then senior
Connor Gallagher (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) scored off a pass from Guest to put the Red Dragons ahead, 7-4, at 8:29. Oswego pulled it to within one with goals from Brodman and Corey O'Connor at 6:52.
Sophomore
Matthew Mangels (St. James/Smithtown East) recorded his first goal of the season at 3:09 for an 8-6 lead, however the Lakers closed out the game with five unanswered goals. Gavin Elston recorded two goals and Jack Delany had two assists during the run. Aiden Kenyon recorded three saves in the final period for the Lakers to hold on to the win.
O'Neil finished with a goal and an assist, Guest had two assists and junior
Harrison Boukas (North Massapequa/Plainegde) finished with 15 saves.
Logan Prescott won 14 of 20 faceoffs and Kenyon finished with 10 saves for Oswego.
The Lakers outshot the Red Dragons 48-36 and had a 30-18 ground ball advantage.
Oneonta is back in action Saturday against Plattsburgh State on Red Dragon Field at 12 pm.
