BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team won their fifth straight game with an 8-5 SUNYAC road victory over Brockport, Saturday afternoon. Freshman
Jamie O'Neil (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) recorded three goals with one assist, juniors
Matthew Krieg (Port Jefferson Station/Comsewogue) posted one goal and two assists and
Evan Kelly (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) scored twice. Once they scored, the Red Dragons held the lead the entire game and finished with a 27-13 shots on goal advantage. The team improved to 6-2 on the season and 2-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Golden Eagles fell to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Â
After Brockport turned it over, Oneonta cleared the ball and got it to Krieg who dished it to O'Neil for the first goal at 12:56. A minute later, junior
Jesse AlfanoStJohn (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) finished the clear before he found the back of the net to go up two. The Golden Eagles cut the deficit at 8:53 with a goal from Jhovanny Olivares, but the Red Dragons answered back before the end of the period. Armando Guerrero (Bellmore/Wellington C. Mepham) picked up the groundball and passed it to senior
Owen Vail (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) to go ahead 3-1.
Olivares found the back of the net for the Golden Eagles at 6:05 in the second, however O'Neil regained the two-goal lead at 3:44 for the Red Dragons to go into halftime up 4-2. Â
Carson Colucci started the third with a goal to pull Brockport back within one before Kelly and O'Neil scored within 20 seconds of one another for a 6-3 lead at 12:05. Both teams traded goals to end the third period. Ryan McCarthy scored for the Golden Eagles, and Krieg found the net for the Red Dragons off the pass from O'Neil.
Oneonta added an insurance goal with 11:16 remaining when senior
Sam Haita (Stephentown/La Salle Institute) dished it to Kelly for his second of the game. Olivares recorded his third goal with 7:12 left to make it a three-goal game, but junior
Harrison Boukas (North Massapequa/Plainegde) shut down the Golden Eagles in the closing minutes, saving three shots and securing the victory.
Boukas finished the game with eight saves. Junior
Stephen Sommo (Floral Park/Floral Park) was 8-for-11 on face offs and had five ground balls. Â
Cameron Kuzniar recorded 19 saves for Brockport and Olivaries had a hat trick.
The Red Dragons was 12-12 on clear attempts and committed 11 turnovers, while the Golden Eagles were 17-18 on clears and committed 19 turnovers. Â
Oneonta is back in action Saturday for another SUNYAC game on the road against Oswego State at 1 pm.
