ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta baseball team earned its tenth win of the season with a 3-2 SUNYAC victory over Plattsburgh on Sunday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Cardinals fall to 4-8 and 0-1 in the conference.Â
Plattsburgh went 1-2-3 in its first at-bat, with senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) striking out the lead-off batter. Sophomore Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) led off with a single, but Oneonta could not manage a run in the opening inning. Liquori struck out two more Cardinals in the top of the second inning to keep it 0-0, and the Red Dragons then struck first in the bottom of the frame. Junior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) singled to center field before fifth-year Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) git a single. Senior Nate Guillen (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) added a hit to load the bases. A single from freshman Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) brought Wurster home. Gilkey followed up by grounding out into a double play, but Ottaviano reached home. Senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) singled Gullien in to put Oneonta up 3-0.Â
Both teams went 1-2-3 in the third inning, and Plattsburgh scored a run in the top of the fourth when Alex Kornblau scored.Â
The Cardinals made it a one-run game in the top of the seventh when Jack Defayette launched a home run into left field. Senior Logan Carriero (Somers, NY/Somers) came in as a relief pitcher and struck out two more batters to hold the lead. Â
Carriero struck out two more Plattsburgh batters in the ninth inning to secure the Oneonta win.
Kaseta hit 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Wurster, Ottaviano, and Guillen each added one run.Â
Liquori (1-0) went 6.0 innings with three strikeouts, and Carriero picked up the save pitching 3.0 innings with four strikeouts.Â
Sean Malamud pitched a complete game for the Cardinals and struck out two batters.
Oneonta plays Plattsburgh on Mon. Mar. 27 in a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. on Red Dragon Baseball Field.Â
