Oneonta Sweeps Plattsburgh

ONEONTA, N.Y. - In a rare Monday morning SUNYAC doubleheader, the Oneonta baseball team swept Plattsburgh to finish the weekend 3-0 and pick up their tenth-straight victory. Oneonta won the first game 3-2 and then the second game 5-1. The Red Dragons move to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference, while the Cardinals fall to 4-10 and 0-3 in the SUNYAC.

Junior pitcher Devin Rooney (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) struck out two Cardinals to open the first inning, and then Oneonta picked up the first run in the bottom of the frame. Senior Liam Kaseta (Somers, NY/Somers) reached third following a single from senior Jake Barrett (Hauppauge, NY/St. Anthony's). Senior Sean Liquori (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) sent a single down the right-field line to bring Kaseta home.

Rooney pitched well, striking out six batters over the following five innings.

Plattsburgh used a two-run sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Nick Cergol walked and reached third following a Connor Gonzalski single to right center. Jack Defayette singled in Cergo, and then Gonzalski scored after Andrew Wein grounded out to the third base.

Barrett answered in the bottom half with a lead-off home run to left field to tie at 2-2. The Red Dragons retook the lead in the seventh from an RBI triple to left center field. Graduate pitcher Derek Shea (West Kingston, RI/Wells College) came in as relief in the top of the eighth and struck out three Cardinals batters. In the final inning, senior Logan Carriero (Somers, NY/Somers) secured the win with one strikeout and picked up his fifth save.

Kaseta finished 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI, while Barrett was 2-of-4 with a run and RBI. Liquori added two hits.

Rooney finished with a career-high eight strikeouts and pitched 6.0 innings. Junior Tom Roefaro (Utica, NY/Notre Dame) (2-0) earned the win and gave up just one hit.

Oneonta poured in three runs in the first inning of the afternoon game. Sophomore Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) hit a lead-off single and took third after Barrett flew out to the right field. Gilkey scored on a wild pitch, and a single from Liquori brought in runs from sophomore Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) and Kaseta.

The Red Dragons pushed the lead to 4-0 in the second inning with a Kaseta RBI single. Plattsburgh could not respond as junior pitcher Michael Sadowski (Queens, NY/Queens Metropolitan) struck out three batters in the third and another three in the fourth.

The Cardinals scored in the sixth following a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-1. Oneonta added one more in the eighth as Gilkey ran in from a Barrett sacrifice fly.

Sadowski (1-1) went 5.1 innings with nine strikeouts. Sophomore Kyle Roper (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) picked up the save going 3.2 innings with four strikeouts.

Gilkey had a season-high three hits and three runs. Liquori had two hits with two RBI.

Oneonta plays SUNY Canton on Tues. Mar. 28 for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Red Dragon Baseball Field.
