ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta baseball set a program record with 12-straight wins following a doubleheader sweep over SUNY Canton on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons (14-3) won the first game 7-2 and then defeated the Roos (3-13) 6-5 in the second game. The previous win streak was 11 set in the 2011 season.Â
SUNY Canton got on the board first when Nick Shoemaker reached third on wild pitches. Freshman Martin Thorsland (Maryland, NY/Milford Central) settled in and struck out the following two batters. A first baseman error allowed Shoemaker to run home to put the Roos up 1-0 before Thorsland struck out a third batter.
In the bottom of the frame, sophomore Josh Gilkey (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minor) doubled to left center and then stole third. Junior Alex Wurster (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) singled him in to tie 1-1. SUNY Canton brought another run at the top of the second to go ahead 2-1.Â
Oneonta took the lead in the bottom of the third when senior Jake Barrett (Hauppauge, NY/St. Anthony's) singled in Wurster, and then sophomore Anthony Foglia (Somers, NY/North Salem) singled down the right-field line to give Barrett a run.Â
Graduate Derek Shea (West Kingston, RI/Wells College) came in as a relief pitcher in the fifth inning and struck out two Roos' batters, and the Red Dragons picked up two more runs at their turn to bat. Fifth-year Joe Ottaviano (Nanuet, NY/Albertus Magnus) hit an RBI single, and then senior Nate Guillen (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) brought in a run to push the Oneonta lead to 5-2.Â
The Red Dragons added two more in the sixth to hold on for the comfortable win.Â
Gilkey batted 2-for-4 with two runs, while Barrett went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Thorsland (2-0) struck out seven batters in 4.0 innings, while Shea struck out five with no hits in 3.0 innings.Â
Oneonta took a 4-0 lead after five innings in the second game. The Red Dragons scored twice in the first inning when Bradley Turner (Stone Ridge, NY/Rondout Valley) brought in two runs with a triple down the right-field line. A Gilkey single RBI in the second made it 3-0, and senior Franklin Padilla (Brooklyn, NY/LaSalle Academy) doubled in an RBI in the fifth for the fourth run.Â
SUNY Canton capitalized on some Oneonta miscues in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie 4-4. With the bases loaded, Matt Henry scored on a wild pitch, and a Red Dragons error allowed two more runners to reach home. The Roos took the lead in the seventh when D'Agnese singled in a run to make it 5-4.Â
Guillen led off with a triple in the final inning and then reached home after a Turner single to left field. Oneonta won on a wild final play when the Roos' catcher attempted to catch Turner stealing third and overthrew the ball, which allowed Turner to run home.Â
Junior Matthew Russo (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) pitched 5.2 innings with three strikeouts, while senior Logan Carriero (Somers, NY/Somers) (1-0) went 1.0 innings.Â
