Box Score 4 LAKE NONA, FLA. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team traveled to Lake Nona, Florida for a stretch of tough matches this past week. The Red Dragons went up against Fairleigh Dickinson University, #29 Denison University, Roger Williams University, Stevens College, and Connecticut College, but were unable to win a match. Â
Monday – Fairleigh Dickinson 6, Oneonta 1; #29 Denison 5, Oneonta 0
Oneonta opened the trip with a doubleheader against the Knights and Big Red. Against Fairleigh Dickinson, Oneonta won a point on the No. 6 singles court from senior
Jessica Harris (Cobleskill/Academy of Holy Names) by default. In their match against Denison, juniors
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) and
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) kept their match the closest on the No. 2 doubles court but fell 8-3. Â
Tuesday – Roger Williams 6, Oneonta 3
Schutte and Shaw won their doubles match in their match against Roger Williams' Gianna Ferraro and Gracie McCarthy. Junior
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) was paired with senior
Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) while Harris teamed up with freshman
Danielle Copp (Marcellus/Marcellus) to battle on the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles court, but fell in both 5-8 and 4-8, respectively, for the Hawks to go up 2-1. Â
On the No. 1 singles court, Holtermann got her revenge from the doubles match and defeated Emma Place. After dropping the first set 6-3, Holtermann won the second set 6-4, forcing the tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Holtermann controlled the court and won 10-2. Karen redeemed herself on the No. 4 court with a double bagel victory against Gracie McCarthy, 6-0, 6-0. Schutte had a close match on the No. 2 court against Gianna Ferraro. Schutte took the first set 6-2 before dropping the second 6-3, forcing a tie-breaking set where Ferraro won 10-3. Gabrielle Loria (Levittown, N.Y.) had very close matches in their respective courts however fell in straight sets. Shaw came up short to Alessia Cahoon on the No. 3 court, 7-6, 6-4, and Loria fell on the No. 5 court to Izzy Pecora, 7-5, 6-3, as the Hawks won the match 6-3. Â
Thursday – Stevens 8, Oneonta 1
In the Red Dragons lone win against Stevens, Karen won on the No. 3 Singles court over Polina Odintseva, 6-2, 6-1. Â
Thursday – Connecticut College 6, Oneonta 3
Holtermann and Karen played in a back-and-forth match against Caitlin Cass and Anna Slopak on the No. 1 doubles court against Connecticut College. The match worked its way to a 7-7 tie forcing a tiebreaker where Holtermann and Karen came out on top for the 8-7 (7-5) victory. Schutte and Shaw were not as closely contested in their match, though they walked away with an 8-6 win over Lily Kerachsky and Courtney Banks, giving Oneonta a 2-1 lead after doubles. Â
Junior
Madelyn Brophy (Greenwich/Greenwich Central) won on the No. 4 court, with a couple of 6-4 sets against Slopak. In the rest of the singles matches, a couple were toss ups that landed in favor of the Camels. After dropping the first set, Holtermann went into a 10-point tiebreak for the second set where Cass narrowly won 10-8, taking the No. 1 court, 6-2, 7-6 (10-8). On the No. 2 court, Schutte fell in the first set 6-4 but managed to force a tie-breaking third set with a 6-4 win in the second. Unfortunately, Camel's Sana Bhat won the tiebreaker, 10-5 as Connecticut College went on to win the match. Â
The Red Dragons are back in action Sunday, March 26, when they travel to Ithaca for a 2 pm match.
