Men's Tennis Completes Florida Trip

LAKE NONA, FLA. -- The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team traveled south to Lake Nona, Florida to compete against challenging opponents this past week. The Red Dragons faced #1-ranked Case Western Reserve University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Roger Williams University, and Connecticut College but could not come away with a match.  

Monday – Fairleigh Dickinson 7, Oneonta 0
Senior August LePique (New York, NY/Columbia) and freshman William Schmid (Yonkers/Salesian HS) had the closest double match but fell short, 6-3. In singles, Schmid dropped the first set 6-2 but battled in the second set to a 6-6 set, forcing a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, his opponent, Fernando Tardin, won and took the No. 3 court.

Tuesday – Roger Williams 7, Oneonta 2
LePique and Schmid won their No. 2 doubles match against the Hawk's Johnny Baldyga and Ryan Schuck. Seniors Mason Spottek (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley) and Jacob Dornsife (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant) teamed up on the No. 1 court while junior Joshua Mann (East Greenbush/Columbia) paired up with sophomore Noah Khair (New Delhi, INDIA/National Institute of Open Schooling) on the No. 3 court. Both groups were defeated in a couple tough 8-5 matches.  

Tuesday – #1 Case Western Reserve University 9, Oneonta 0
LePique and Schmid had the closest doubles match but fell 8-5 while Dornsife and Spottek dropped their match 8-4. LePique was the only one to win multiple games in a singles set, but ultimately was defeated by Matthew Plunkett, 6-3, 6-1.  

Thursday – Connecticut College 7, Oneonta 2
On the No. 2 double court LePique and Schmid continued their success and dominated Gavin Anderson and Krishh Tipnis for an 8-1 win. With the hot hand, LePique defeated Aaron Fleishman on the No. 1 singles court, 6-3, 6-4. In Schmid's singles match on the No. 4 court, he forced a tiebreaker in the first set against Anderson. Anderson ended up taking the tiebreaker 7-4 for the first set, then won the second set 6-1 over Schmid.

The Red Dragons are back on the road Friday, March 17, for a match against St. John Fisher at 4 pm.
