Softball Splits Against #17 Eastern Connecticut State

MARSHALL, TX. -- The SUNY Oneonta softball team split their doubleheader against nationally-ranked #17 Eastern Connecticut State, Monday afternoon. After the Warriors took game one, 3-1, the Red Dragons won the nightcap, 2-1, improving their record to 1-3 on the season while the Warriors moved to 2-2 overall.  

Game 1: #17 Eastern Connecticut State 3, Oneonta 1
After three scoreless innings, Eastern Connecticut tallied three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Warriors worked a couple of walks then advanced the runners to second and third with two outs. Maggie Barker hit a groundout but made it safely to first on an error, scoring one, then during the next at-bat she stole second to allow other Warrior to cross home on the throw. Barker made it home on a single from Emma Marelli.

Senior Kayla Young (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) led off the top of the fifth with a home run off the first to left center. Oneonta got another two baserunners on with no outs after juniors Sarah Paige (Fort Ann, N.Y./Fort Ann Central) walked and Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue) got an infield single. Paige was later thrown out at home on a fielder's choice and the Red Dragons remained down, 3-1.  

In the top of the sixth, junior Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) singled up the middle while Young and sophomore Sophia Mangone (Ardsley/Ardsley) worked walks to load the bases with two outs. Warriors' Carley Stroker came in for relief and got out of the jam with a strikeout then picked up the save in the seventh.  

Senior Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) (0-2) received the loss after pitching 5.1 innings, allowing three unearned runs off four hits. Sophomore Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) pitched the final 0.2 innings, allowed one hit and one walk.  

Alyssa Vilchez (1-0) earned the win after pitching 5.2 innings, striking out one, and allowed one run off four hits and five walks. Stoker (1) got the save after pitching the final 1.1 innings and striking out one.

Young went 1-for-1 with a pair of walks, including her first home run as a Red Dragon.  

Game 2: #17 Oneonta 2, Eastern Connecticut State 1 
Both teams got a run on the board in the third. Senior Adriana Fiori (Newtown, CT/Brookfield) singled to right center and later stole second base. A couple pitches later, Fiori stole third where the third baseman committed an error, allowing her to cross home. The Warriors got the run back off a Stoker bunt in the bottom half of the inning.

In the top of the fifth with one out, Haley reached first on a bunt then advanced to second on a wild pitch. One out later, senior Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) singled up the middle for Haley to score and gave the Red Dragons a 2-1 lead.   

The Warriors had an opportunity to tie the game in the sixth where they had two runners on with one out. Sophomore Angelina Scalere (Ardsley/Ardsley) came in for relief and struck out the next two batters to end the inning. Scalere pitched in the seventh, struck out one more batter and picked up the save.

Freshman Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) (1-1) earned her first collegiate win after pitching 5.1 innings, allowing one run off six hits and striking out five. Scalere (1) picked up her first save of the season, striking out three batters in 1.2 innings.  

Graduate student Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) went 2-for-3 with a double in game two.  

Victoria Heapy (0-2) received the loss after going 4.2 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and struck out one.  

Stoker and Taylor Darby both went 2-for-3 during the second game for the Warriors.

The Red Dragons are back in action tomorrow against nationall-ranked #13 East Texas Babtist starting at 3 pm.
