WR Sr Day 23

Wrestling Honors Seniors at Dragon Duals

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team recognized their seniors with Senior Day as they hosted a couple dual matches against Penn College of Technology and No. 12 RIT, Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons finished their match against the Wildcats tied at 25 but the Wildcats earned a tie breaking point to win 26-25, before the Red Dragons fell to the Tigers, 44-3. Oneonta is now 7-11 on the season while Penn Tech and RIT moved to 11-9 and 9-3, respectively.

Seniors Michael Blando (Massapequa/Massapequa), Jacob Pine (Hoosick Falls/Hoosick Falls), and juniors Max Yahre (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK), Kenneth Sauer (Franklin/Franklin) and Noah Kennedy (Greene/Greene) all won their matches against Penn Tech. Blando (141) recorded a major decision victory over Patrick Snoke, 24-14. Yahre (157) also posted a major decision win against Cullen Van Rooyen, 15-4, cutting the Red Dragons deficit in the dual, 8-15. Sauer (174) defeated Zach Miller via tech fall, 16-1 at 7:00, with the ride time clinching Sauer's extra match point. Down a dozen in the match, Kennedy (197) and Pine (HWT) tied it up with a pair of max point wins. Kennedy received his win by forfeit, while Pine pinned Billy Bumbarger at 2:38, tying the match at 25. The immediate tie breaker was total max point wins, where the Wildcats recorded three compared to the Red Dragons two, giving Penn Tech the 26-25 final.

Against RIT, sophomore Danny Poggi (West Islip/West Islip) (125) was the only Oneonta wrestler to win in his matchup against the Tigers. He won a 6-0 decision over Aiden Prunoske. Senior Kevin Jorgensen (Bohemia/Connetquot) (184) looked to have had unfortunate timing in his match against No. 12 Colby Giroux. Less than 30 seconds in, it seemed Jorgensen had Giroux pinned, however the official did not have an angle to see it. Giroux would later pin Jorgensen at 3:56.

Before their match against the Wildcats, the Red Dragons acknowledged seniors Sam Berger (East Setauket/Ward Melville), Blando, Greg Brach (Bellmore/Belmore JFK), Tyler Farley (Bay Shore/Bay Shore), Nick Florin (Pine Bush/Pine Bush), Jorgensen, Ryan Meisner (Lindenhurst/Lindenhurst), Diego Orellana (Ossining/Ossining), Pine, Anthony Romero (Spring Valley/Ramapo), and Nick Vandenburg (Rotterdam/Schalmont) for their academic and athletic collegiate career achievements.

Oneonta wrestling will be back in action on February 24 and 25 for the NCAA Mideast Regionals at Ithaca.
