BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team were put in an early deficit and could not climb back as they fell to Brockport in their conference opener, 68-45, on the road Friday evening. Junior
Amanda Zuntag (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) led the team in a few categories with 10 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. The result moved the Red Dragons to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Golden Eagles improved to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in the conference.
Brockport scored the first 13 points of the contest before junior
Sophia Wakin (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) hit the first basket for Oneonta at 6:01. The Golden Eagles continued to build onto the lead throughout the quarter and ended the first on a 13-5 run. During the stretch, junior
Nadia Brown (Troy, NY/Troy) knocked down a three-pointer and Wakin made a layup at the buzzer for the Red Dragons to trail 26-7.
The deficit got up to 24 in the first half until senior
Jenna Harclerode (Sayville, NY/Sayville) drilled a triple then senior
Molly Stephens (LaGrange, NY/Arlington) scored the Red Dragons next five points to make it 34-17 at 4:12. Towards the end of the half, freshman
Megan Desrats (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) nailed one from beyond the arc to pull Oneonta with 16, but Kelsey Morgans split a pair at the line to give Brockport a 39-22 lead at the break.
The Red Dragons got to within 13 with a couple jump shots from Zuntag and sophomore
Lidia Boucher (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central High School) at 5:32 in the third, however the Golden Eagles closed out the quarter with a 12-3 run to go ahead 53-31 into the fourth.
Brown and Zuntag scored the first seven points in the fourth to make it 53-38 with 7:58 to play, but Brockport went on another 12-3 stretch that ended when freshman
Maddie Hoy (Canton, NY/Canton Central) made a layup with 1:49 to go. Mallory Turner gave the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the night with a three-point play with 1:09 left then Desrats scored inside for the 68-45 final.
Brown, Harclerode, and Wakin all recorded six points, Desrats finished with five points and three steals.
Brockport shot 43.3 percent from the field and held a 51-37 advantage on the glass, while Oneonta shot 27.9 percent from the floor.
The Red Dragons are back in action tomorrow at Geneseo for a 2 pm tip-off.
