GENESEO, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team dropped their conference game at Geneseo Saturday afternoon, 63-50. Senior
Jenna Harclerode (Sayville, NY/Sayville) led the team with a career-high 17 points and had eight rebounds as the Red Dragons now sit at 2-4 on the season and 0-2 in the SUNYAC, while the Knights improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Â
Geneseo went on an 8-0 run to start the game which ended when junior
Sophia Wakin (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) scored inside for Oneonta's first basket. Senior
Molly Stephens (LaGrange, NY/Arlington) made a jumper on a fast break opportunity with a minute to go, but Kelly McLaughlin answered back on the next Knights possession to put them ahead 11-4 after one. Â
Junior
Nadia Brown (Troy, NY/Troy) dished it down low to Wakin for the first basket of the second and brought the Red Dragons within five, however the Knights had an 18-7 stretch and extended their lead to 29-13 with 3:25 to play. Harclerode scored nine in the quarter and powered an 8-1 run at the end with Stephens and Wakin to close the gap to 30-21 at halftime. Â
Geneseo made the first couple baskets of the third and managed to hold a double-digit lead for most of the second half. Sophomore
Emma Schwarzbeck (Wallkill, NY/Wallkill Senior High School) hit a pair at the line then stole the ball and found Stephens in transition to make it a nine-point game with 51 seconds left in the third, then the Knights made one from the line and a three to go into the fourth up 50-37. Schwarzbeck and Brown got Oneonta back to single digits to start the fourth, but Geneseo answered back on the next possession with 8:40 to play. After Harclerode nailed a three-pointer, freshman
Megan Desrats (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) hit a jumper with 2:45 to go for a 59-50 game, however the Knights held the Red Dragons scoreless for the remainder of the contest.
Stephens finished with nine points, three assists, and three steals. Wakin ended with nine points and six rebounds and Schwarzbeck had eight points and two assists.
Oneonta shot 29.2 percent from the floor and had a 42-36 rebounding advantage, and Geneseo shot 44.0 percent from the field. Â
The Red Dragons next game is a non-conference matchup on Wednesday against Cobleskill on the road at 6 pm.Â
