ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta women's volleyball team went 1-1 in Saturday afternoon's senior day tri-match against Baruch and Hartwick. The Red Dragons defeated the Bearcats 3-2 before falling 3-0 to the Hawks in the nightcap.Â
Against Baruch, Oneonta won the first two sets 28-26 and 25-19 before falling 25-21 and 25-18. The Red Dragons then took the final 15-11.
Two straight aces from senior Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) gave Oneonta a 6-5 lead in the first. Baruch fought back to take a 13-11 advantage. Kills by Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) and Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) tied 17-17, and the set stayed close until the end. A kill from Baruch's Delaney Killeen made it 26-25 before a Bearcats' error tied. Senior Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills, NY/Cornwall) knocked in two consecutive kills to make it 1-0.Â
After Baruch went ahead 11-8, Oneonta rattled off a 7-0 run with three aces from senior Karli Chamberlin (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls). The Bearcats cut the lead to two before a 6-0 Oneonta span pushed the lead to 22-14, and the Red Dragons secured the second set.
Oneonta went up 16-11 after a Fabrizio kill. A pair of kills from Fabrizo and Davis made it 18-15, but Baruch responded with a 4-0 run to take a one-point lead. Spano blocked an attack to tie 21-21, but the Bearcats took the final four points.Â
The Red Dragons struggled in the fourth set and fell behind 19-16, and the Bearcats won on another 4-0 run.Â
Oneonta took a 3-0 lead to open the fifth set. Baruch tied 4-4 following kills from Sarah Chung and Julia Perkowski. The Bearcats went up 10-7 before Spano sent in a kill to start a 6-0 run. Fabrizio and May tallied the final kills to give Oneonta the victory.Â
Fabrizio led the team with 15 kills and 19 digs, while Davis recorded 13 kills, four aces, and five blocks. May tacked on 13 kills. Senior Sophia Gerace (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) made 31 assists, and Layla Driscoll-Webster (Shullsburg, WI/Shullsburg) had 20. Mikayla Kendrick (Nassau, NY/Columbia High School/East Greenbush) had 22 digs and three blocks. Chamberlin finished with four aces and 21 digs.
Oneonta fell 25-22, 25-23, and 25-16 to Hartwick in the second match.Â
Davis grabbed eight kills and three blocks, while Fabrizio had seven kills and nine digs. Sophomore Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) added seven kills and three aces.
Hartwick's Shaelyn Thornton had 15 kills and 13 digs, while Vanessa Seymour tallied 33 assists and three aces.Â
