Red Dragons Record Shutout over Blue Devils

Women's Tennis Win First Day at Binghamton Tennis Center

Box Score BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team started their three-day conference stretch at the Binghamton Tennis Center with a 9-0 shutout victory over Fredonia, Thursday evening. The Red Dragons improved to 5-4 on the season and 3-2 in the SUNYAC while the Blue Devils dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in the conference.  

Seniors Julia Holtermann (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) and Brianna Shaw (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) defeated Caitlin Snyder and Bernadette Gens, 8-2, on the No. 1 doubles court. Freshmen Hailey O'Connor (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) and Haley Peck (West Point, N.Y./James I. O'Neil) recorded an 8-2 win over Lucy Prevet and Sophie Olson on the No. 2 court, and senior Illana Ger (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) and sophomore Danielle Copp (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) secured the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory on the No. 3 court against Sierra Allen and Gabriella Farr.  

Oneonta kept the momentum rolling in the singles matches and won all six matches. Holtermann won on the No. 1 court over Gens in straight 6-1 sets. O'Connor, Ger, and Copp also won their respected matches in straight sets. O'Connor defeated Olson on the No. 4 court, 6-2, 6-3, Ger bested Allen on the No. 5 court, 6-1, 7-5, and after a 6-1 first set win, Copp took the second set in a tie break over Prevet on the No. 3 court, 7-6 (7-5).  

Peck and sophomore Kelly Hayes (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) each went into a super tiebreaker after splitting sets in their matches. On the No. 2 court, Peck won the first set 6-2 over Snyder before Snyder sneaked out the second set in a tie break, 7-6 (7-4). In the super tiebreaker, Peck won, 12-10. Hayes dropped the first set on the No. 6 court to Farr, 7-5, then she answered back with a 6-2 second set. In her super tiebreaker, Hayes battled it out with Farr and came away with a 15-13 win for her first collegiate victory.  

The Red Dragons continue SUNYAC play at the Binghamton Tennis Center on Friday, October 6, against Brockport at 6 pm.
