ONEONTA, N.Y. -Â A penalty kick goal in the 86th minute gave Cortland a 3-2 win over the Oneonta women's soccer team in the Battle of the Red Dragons on Wednesday afternoon. Oneonta falls to 4-2-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the SUNYAC, while Cortland rises to 7-2-2 and 3-0-1 in the conference.Â
Offensively, Cortland controlled the pace and outshot Oneonta 16-3. The visitors struck first when Hannah Blacher fired a shot from 20 yards toward the Oneonta goal in the 20th minute. The ball hit a defender and redirected into the back of the net to make it 1-0.Â
Cortland continued to hold possession until Oneonta finally had a chance at 35:05. The Red Dragons drove the ball into the Cortland box. Cortland attempted to clear the ball out but kicked straight into the foot of Gianna Gritzmacher (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue), who chipped the shot straight back for the equalizer goal.Â
Oneonta nearly scored in the second half when senior Joie Tortorice (Melville, NY/Walt Whitman) took a cross and shot wide left on an open goal. Oneonta drew a foul at 66:53, and junior Kayla Schwizer (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) lined up from 30 yards out. Schwizer played the ball perfectly to Jianna Chapman (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville), who headed the shot into the left corner to put Oneonta ahead 2-1.
Cortland took some long-range shots to attempt to break through the Oneonta backline, and a shot from Simone Neivel was saved by goalie Bryanna Meehan (Roxbury, NY/Roxbury Central). Oneonta's defense continued to hold until Bella Casucci knocked in a goal in the 84th minute to tie 2-2. An unfortunate handball on Oneonta two minutes later gave Cortland a penalty kick at 86:38. Neivel lined up and slipped the shot into the right corner to give Cortland the victory.Â
Oneonta next plays Oswego on Sat. Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. on Red Dragon Field.
