Fleming’s Hat Trick Completes Red Dragons’ Comeback Over Engineers

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team was down two goals after the first period before graduate student Morgan Fleming (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville) recorded three goals for a hat trick and the 3-2 comeback victory over RPI, Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Red Dragons finished the season with an 8-10 overall record, while the Engineers finished 4-13.

RPI jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first after Dani Samuelson and Abi Herrington scored.

Oneonta scored their first goal of the contest at 20:06 when senior Molly Geyer (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) sent a lead pass to Fleming into the left side of the shooting circle where Fleming had an open shot and fired it past the Engineer goalie for the goal.

The Red Dragons tied the game at 42:47 in the third off a penalty corner. Senior Taylor Moore (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) pushed the ball out near the left side of the circle to senior Michaela Maniscalco (Northport, N.Y./Northport). Maniscalco hit the ball towards the front of the cage to Fleming who gained control for the shot and scored.

Fleming collected the hat trick and gave Oneonta their first lead of the game at 48:26 when freshman Alexandra Howell (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) fed Fleming the ball and she stepped inside the circle for the game-winning shot. RPI had one chance to tie the game at 52:00 with a shot by Julie Thomas, but sophomore Maura Leib (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) made the save and the Red Dragons held on to the win.

Leib finished the game with six saves while Tess Garchinsky recorded one save and Sarah Nace had two saves for the Engineers.

RPI outshot Oneonta 12-8 in total shots and 8-6 on goal, while Oneonta held an 11-7 advantage in penalty corners.
