ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team fell 3-0 to New Paltz to wrap up SUNYAC play on Wednesday evening. The Red Dragons fought to three close sets of 25-18, 25-17, and 25-17.Â
Oneonta went ahead 2-0 in the first set following a kill from senior Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills, NY/Cornwall). The Hawks answered with three straight points before the Red Dragons rattled off a 3-0 run with an Abby Stevens (Otisville, NY/Minisink Valley, Slate Hill) service ace. New Paltz pulled away for an 8-6 lead before sophomore Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) knocked in a kill. The Hawks went up by one, and then freshman Julia Reedy (Galway, NY/Galway) hit a kill to spur a 5-0 Oneonta run that consisted of two Layla Driscoll-Webster (Shullsburg, WI/Shullsburg) aces to go up 12-9.Â
New Paltz chipped away at the lead and used a few Oneonta errors to take a 15-13 lead. The Red Dragons tied 15-15 behind a Fabrizio kill and a Spano block, but the Hawks responded with six consecutive points. The Red Dragons cut it to 22-18, but New Paltz grabbed the final three points on kills from three different players.Â
After New Paltz took an 11-7 lead in the second, Oneonta used a 3-0 span with a Spano kill and block to make it a one-point set. The Hawks continued to hold a slight lead until kills from Victoria Venus and Jamie Albrecht pushed the Hawks up 18-13. Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) tallied a kill to put the score at 23-17, but New Paltz took the final two points.Â
Oneonta fell behind 19-9 in the third set but made a small rally with a 5-0 run with two more kills from Spano. With the score 23-17, the Hawks took the following two points, and Melanie Podstupka won on an ace.Â
Spano led the team with six kills and three blocks, while Driscoll-Webster had three aces and 15 assists. Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) grabbed 17 digs.
Oneonta next plays against Alfred on Fri. Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. in Rochester, NY.
