CLINTON, N.Y. -- The No. 22 Oneonta men's soccer team capped off the regular season with a 1-1 tie in a non-conference match at Hamilton, Tuesday afternoon. Senior
Ian Zingaro (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) hit the equalizer in the 69th minute and the Red Dragons finished the regular season 12-2-3 overall, 5-2-2 in the SUNYAC, while the Continentals ended the season 6-4-5 overall and 3-4-3 in the NESCAC.
"Yet another game where we concede a terrible goal," said head coach
Iain Byrne. "We did great to fight back in the second half, but we cannot continue to give up these soft goals if we hope to make a run in the playoffs."
After a first half of play with no shots recorded on goal, Hamilton got on the board in the 53rd minute when they caused a turnover deep in Oneonta's territory which allowed Luke Peplowski to get a shot off from the top of the box and score. Â
The Red Dragons tied it up midway through the half when they were moving the ball down the left sideline. After a couple touches from a few players, the ball got to freshman
Adrian Matute (Islip, N.Y./Islip) who passed it to Zingaro at the top of the penalty area. Zingaro chipped the ball in the air, allowed a Hamilton defender to jump past him, and fired the aerial ball into the left side of the net to tie the game. Neither team could get the upper hand over the other in the final 20 minutes and the match resulted in a draw.
Senior
Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and Kai Haesslein for the Continentals each recorded three saves. Â
Both teams had four shots on net, Hamilton had 11 total shots to Oneonta's nine, and the Red Dragons had four corner kicks to the Continentals' two.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday for the first round of the SUNYAC tournament against Geneseo at 2:30 pm on Red Dragon Field.Â
