Red Dragons Tame Bears in Four Sets

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Senior Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) recorded a career-high 19 kills on 24 attacks (.708 hitting) to help the Oneonta women's volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Potsdam on Saturday afternoon. Oneonta took the first two sets 25-18 and 25-16 before falling 25-21 in the third. They then cruised to a 25-10 win in the fourth set. The Red Dragons have won their second straight match and move to 5-15 overall and 2-6 in the SUNYAC, while the Bears fall to 5-16 and 0-7 in conference play.

Potsdam took a 2-0 lead before freshman Autumn Singleton (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) knocked in a kill to start a 6-0 Oneonta run. Junior Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) sent in an ace, and then freshman Julia Reedy (Galway, NY/Galway) and Davis blocked an attack to make it 6-2. Davis sent in a kill and followed up with a block, making it 8-3. Oneonta pushed its lead to five after kills from Reedy and Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside). Potsdam pulled within three following a service error, but the Red Dragons answered with seven straight points with two aces from freshman Abby Stevens (Otisville, NY/Minisink Valley, Slate Hill) to go ahead 18-8.

The Bears used a 6-0 span to cut the lead to single digits but kills from Reedy and Davis pushed the advantage to 21-15. A pair of kills by Davis and McCabe brought the Red Dragons within the set point, and senior Isabella Fabrizo knocked in the final kill.

The second set started close, with Potsdam taking an 8-6 lead. Oneonta used a 6-0 run to go up by four, then two straight kills from Davis and another by Reedy made it 16-11. After the Bears cut the lead to 19-16, Oneonta closed out the set, scoring six consecutive with two Karli Chamberlin (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) service aces.

Oneonta stumbled in the third set after falling behind 5-0. Two straight kills by Reedy made it 14-10, but Potsdam continued to hold its narrow lead. A 5-0 Red Dragons' span brought it within two, but the Bears took three of the final four points to make it 2-1.

It was all Oneonta in the fourth, as the team opened on a 9-0 run with four aces from junior Layal Driscoll-Webster. Potsdam responded with five straight to make it 9-5, but another Red Dragons' run with a Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) kill and block pushed the lead to 14-6. Fabrizio knocked in a kill to spur five straight Oneonta points, and the Red Dragons finished off the Bears with another 5-0 run capped off with an Alicea ace.

Reedy tallied 14 kills with nine digs, while Driscoll-Webster led the team with five aces and 38 assists. Chamberlin added three aces and 14 digs. Alicea led the team with 28 digs.

Potsdam's Alyssa Adams recorded nine kills, 13 digs, and two blocks. Sophia Layer made 16 assists.
