CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team stayed close but ultimately fell 3-0 to Cortland on Friday afternoon. Oneonta falls to 3-14 overall and 0-5 in the SUNYAC, while Cortland moves to 15-3 and 4-0 in the conference.
Oneonta's Layal Driscoll-Webster led off with a kill to give a 1-0 lead, but Cortland responded with an 8-0 run. Senior Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) knocked in a kill to begin a 4-0 run to cut the lead to three, and then a kill from Colleen McCabe (Rockville Centre, NY/Oceanside) made it 9-6. A solid 5-1 span pushed the Cortland advantage to 14-7 before Katie Spano (Dryden, NY/Dryden) registered a kill. Cortland pulled away with a ten-point lead but kills from Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) and Driscoll-Webster cut the lead to eight. Another Spano kill pulled Oneonta within six, but the lead was too much as Cortland's Anna Pilkey sealed the first set with a kill.Â
Oneonta dropped the second set 25-18 after a close start. After falling behind 7-3, Oneonta used a 5-1 span with two kills from Spano and another by May to tie 8-8. The teams traded leads until Cortland took a 12-10 lead following a kill from Giovanni Rossi. Oneonta answered with a 4-0 run capped off with an Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) ace to take a 14-12 lead. Oneonta held off a Cortland run, and senior Isabella Fabrizo made it 17-16 after sending in a kill. Two Cortland kills put the home team up by one before Spano tied with a kill. Cortland then ran off with seven straight points to win the second set.
Oneonta fell behind 9-4 in the third before using a 5-0 run to tie. Cortland grabbed two aces from Ryan Hinshaw to go up 15-10 as Oneonta struggled to regain momentum. McCabe sent in an ace to make it 22-16 before Cortland grabbed the final three points.
Spano and McCabe each had six kills, while Davis recorded two blocks. Driscoll-Webster made 20 assists, while Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior High School)Â had ten digs.
Cortland's Allie Sturgess finished with nine kills, while Hinshaw tallied three aces.
Oneonta travels to play Oswego on Sat. Oct. 14 at 1 p.m.
