ALFRED, N.Y. – Junior Jianna Chapman's (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) first-career goal proved to be the game-winner as the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team defeated Alfred University 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons move to 2-0 and record their second straight shutout. The Saxons fall to 1-1 with the loss.
In a scoreless first half, Alfred outshot Oneonta 5-3 and attacked the goal early. Goalkeeper Claire Lepper (Poland, NY/Poland) wrapped up a shot from Olivia Gilbert, and then Lina Young's shot sailed high over the goal. The Red Dragons responded when Abbey Wood (Dover Plains, NY/Dover Plains) fired on goal, but Alfred's Kiani Barnard-Pratt made the stop.
The action slowed down until senior Joie Tortorice (Melville, NY/Walt Whitman) launched a shot, but the goalkeeper was again there to make the save. Lepper made one more save before halftime as the game went 0-0 into the break.
Oneonta struck early in the second half, scoring in the 53rd minute when Chapman found the back of the net. Senior Robin Confer (Chenango Forks, NY/Chenango Forks) and first-year Tara Nicholson (Bayside, NY/Archbishop Molloy) kept the pressure on the Alfred goalkeeper with a pair of shots, but that proved to be the game's lone goal.
The Red Dragons outshot the Saxons 11-7, but Alfred held an 8-2 corner kick advantage. Lepper (2-0) made two saves and now has two shutouts on the season.
Oneonta plays in its home opener on Sat. Sept. 10 against Union at 12:30 p.m.
