ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Oneonta women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 2-0 to Union on the opening day of the Mayor's Cup on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Red Dragons move to 2-1, while the Dutchwomen remain undefeated at 3-0.
Union scored early in the first half when Sam Friedman chipped the shot past the goalkeeper at 6:59 following a scramble in front of the next. The Red Dragons responded with three shots within the next eight minutes, but the staunch Dutchwomen's defense prevented any clear looks. Senior Hannah Kelly (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury) finally gave Oneonta an on-goal look, but the Union goalkeeper wrapped up the bottom center shot.
The Dutchwomen controlled the midfield until junior Jianna Chapman (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) snuck in a shot at the 38th minute. She hit bottom right, but the Union goalie recorded the stop.
Union netted its second goal five minutes into the second half when Emma Maley found Friedman for her second goal of the game. The Red Dragons picked up the pace afterward and went on to outshoot the Dutchwomen 9-7 in the half but could not find the back of the net.
In the 53rd minute, first-year Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) had a chance when she used her speed to break through the Union defense. Ring fired a shot low, and the Union goalkeeper made the save. Senior Robin Confer (Chenango Forks, NY/Chenango Forks) nearly scored on a long-range shot but just hit the crossbar instead.
Union went on to outshoot Oneonta 16-13, while the Red Dragons had a 3-1 corner kick advantage. Claire Lepper (Poland, NY/Poland) (2-1) finished the game with five saves.
Oneonta is back on Sunday for the second game of the Mayor's Cup and plays Endicott at 12:30 p.m. on Red Dragon Field.
