Red Dragons Shoulder Loss to Gulls in Mayor’s Cup

ONEONTA, N.Y. – A physical Endicott team defeated Oneonta 2-0 on Sunday afternoon to claim the Mayor's Cup title at Red Dragon Field. The Gulls went on to outshoot the Red Dragons 22-3 and controlled the game's pace. Oneonta falls to 2-2-0, while Endicott moves to 3-1-0.

Endicott controlled the midfield and rattled off two on-goal shots within the first four minutes. Goalkeeper Claire Lepper (Poland, NY/Poland) stopped a bottom center attempt from Lindsey Papa and then turned aside a shot by Riley Rischitelli.

The Gulls kept up the pressure by taking three consecutive corners at the 19th minute, and Rischitelli finally broke through by netting the opening goal at 21:17.

Lepper stopped another two shots from Elizabeth Healy in the 35th minute, but the Red Dragons could not surmount any counterattacks. First-year Lauren Goyette (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and then senior Joie Tortorice (Melville, NY/Walt Whitman) managed two contested shots in the half's final minutes but could not connect on goal.

Endicott held Oneonta without a single shot in the second half. The Gulls scored again in the 75th minute after Morgan Hubert collected a rebound save from Lepper and chipped the ball into the back of the net.

Lepper (2-2) finished the game with ten saves, while Endicott's Jaqueline Ruggiero made one stop.

Lepper and sophomore Shannon Lowney (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) were named to the all-tournament team for their performances. Endicott's Grace Jewett was named the offensive MVP, while Angelina Vendetti was the defensive MVP. Carly Matthews, Elizabeth Healey, and Ruggiero were also tabbed to the all-tournament team.

Oneonta next hosts Vassar on Sat. Sept. 15 at 2 p.m.
