Schwizer Nets Equalizer in Draw with Buffalo State

Nicholson Earns First-Career Assist

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Sophomore Kayla Schwizer (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) scored the game-tying goal in the 74th minute to give the Oneonta women's soccer team a 1-1 draw in the SUNYAC opener against Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon. With the tie, the Red Dragons stand at 2-3-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the conference. The Bengals move to 5-1-2 and 1-0-1 in the SUNYAC.

In Oneonta's most aggressive games of the season, the Red Dragons outshot the Bengals 8-0 in the first half. SUNYAC leading scorer Macey Gioeli was held without a single shot in the first half due to some physical defending by sophomore Shannon Lowney (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) and Schwizer.

Lowney fired a long-range attempt at 8:16, but Buffalo State goalkeeper Isabella Vene made the stop. Oneonta kept the pressure up with three consecutive shots by Leighann Perciballi (Northport, NY/Kings Park), but none could find the back of the net. In the 31st minute, senior Emma Kirkpatrick (Wading River, NY/Shoreham Wading River) broke through the Bengals' backline and chipped a shot on goal that Vene knocked out of bounds.

First-year Kaiden Ring (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) opened the second half with an early shot on goal, but again the Buffalo State defense prevented a clear look. Despite being limited to no shots in the first, the Bengals scored off their second attempt at 60:48 when Ryan Berman fired the ball into the top right corner of the Oneonta goal.

The Red Dragons picked up the pace even more, and Lowney took another long shot from the top of the box that hit the Bengals' goalie. The ball bounced out and found its way to first-year Tara Nicholson (Bayside, NY/Archbishop Molloy), who tapped the ball to Schwizer. She then chipped the ball over the defense and into the net.

Oneonta had a few more chances in the final minutes with looks from Ring and Jianna Chapman (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville), but the Red Dragons settled for the draw.

Oneonta finished by outshooting Buffalo State 18-3 and held a 10-0 corner kick advantage.

Nicholson earned her first-career assist, while Perciballi led the team with four shots.

Buffalo State's Vene made 11 saves.

Oneonta next hosts New Paltz on Wed. Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. on Red Dragon Field.
