Oneonta Falls to Geneseo in Conference Play

GENESEO, N.Y. – Junior Caitlin Christie (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) matched a career-high with 11 kills, but the Oneonta women's volleyball team fell in three sets to Geneseo on Friday evening. The Knights won 25-16, 25-16, and 25-16 to move to 6-6 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC. Meanwhile, the Red Dragons slip to 5-6 and 0-2 in the conference.

Geneseo opened on a 5-0 run in the first set before two Knights' errors broke the streak. Senior Casey Biggers (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) began a 3-0 Oneonta span following a kill, and then a block from Biggers and junior Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) cut the Geneseo lead to 7-5. The Knights continued to stay ahead, but the Red Dragons capitalized on some opponent errors and an ace from Christie to take their first lead at 10-9. Oneonta took a 12-10 lead after first-year Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) knocked in a kill, but Geneseo scored the following seven points. The Red Dragons struggled to regain their rhythm as the Knights took a 24-14 lead. Senior Clara Culeton (Oswego, NY/Oswego) sent in an ace, but Geneseo's Jackie Borland scored the final kill.

Two early kills from Christie gave Oneonta a 4-3 lead in the second. Kills from the Knights' Linda Rossi and Borland put Geneseo back up at 7-4 before Davis sent in a kill. Another three unanswered Geneseo points made it 10-5. Isabella Imbo concluded a 4-0 run with a kill to give Geneseo a 17-8 lead. Christie followed up with a kill, and then Christie and Culeton blocked a Madison Gamberg attack to cut the lead to seven. Two Knights' errors and two Christie kills made it 19-14. After some back-and-forth points, May knocked in a kill to put the score at 22-16. The Knights then scored the next three to win the set.

Geneseo took another early lead in the third set before Davis tallied a kill to cut the score to 5-4. The Knights went on to push their advantage to 11-6. Oneonta took advantage of some Geneseo errors to stay in the match, and a kill by Christie cut the lead to 17-13. Three Geneseo aces pushed the Knights ahead 21-13. The Knights then took four of the final five points to complete the sweep.

Christie hit .333 percent and added an ace with seven digs. Culeton finished with five kills, and Carsyn Rachuta (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) had a team-high ten digs. Senior Kayla Rende (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) dished out 14 assists.

The Red Dragons look to bounce back when they play Brockport on Sat. Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.
