GENESEO, N.Y. – Junior Caitlin Christie (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) matched a career-high with 11 kills, but the Oneonta women's volleyball team fell in three sets to Geneseo on Friday evening. The Knights won 25-16, 25-16, and 25-16 to move to 6-6 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC. Meanwhile, the Red Dragons slip to 5-6 and 0-2 in the conference.
Geneseo opened on a 5-0 run in the first set before two Knights' errors broke the streak. Senior Casey Biggers (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) began a 3-0 Oneonta span following a kill, and then a block from Biggers and junior Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) cut the Geneseo lead to 7-5. The Knights continued to stay ahead, but the Red Dragons capitalized on some opponent errors and an ace from Christie to take their first lead at 10-9. Oneonta took a 12-10 lead after first-year Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) knocked in a kill, but Geneseo scored the following seven points. The Red Dragons struggled to regain their rhythm as the Knights took a 24-14 lead. Senior Clara Culeton (Oswego, NY/Oswego) sent in an ace, but Geneseo's Jackie Borland scored the final kill.
Two early kills from Christie gave Oneonta a 4-3 lead in the second. Kills from the Knights' Linda Rossi and Borland put Geneseo back up at 7-4 before Davis sent in a kill. Another three unanswered Geneseo points made it 10-5. Isabella Imbo concluded a 4-0 run with a kill to give Geneseo a 17-8 lead. Christie followed up with a kill, and then Christie and Culeton blocked a Madison Gamberg attack to cut the lead to seven. Two Knights' errors and two Christie kills made it 19-14. After some back-and-forth points, May knocked in a kill to put the score at 22-16. The Knights then scored the next three to win the set.
Geneseo took another early lead in the third set before Davis tallied a kill to cut the score to 5-4. The Knights went on to push their advantage to 11-6. Oneonta took advantage of some Geneseo errors to stay in the match, and a kill by Christie cut the lead to 17-13. Three Geneseo aces pushed the Knights ahead 21-13. The Knights then took four of the final five points to complete the sweep. Â
Christie hit .333 percent and added an ace with seven digs. Culeton finished with five kills, and Carsyn Rachuta (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) had a team-high ten digs. Senior Kayla Rende (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) dished out 14 assists.
The Red Dragons look to bounce back when they play Brockport on Sat. Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.
