The Inside Story
Game 1 – Oneonta 9, Plattsburgh 1 (6 innings)
Â
Oneonta plated four runs in the top of the third inning to break a scoreless tie. Junior
Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) walked with two outs and was followed by senior
Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) who hit a single to put two runners on for the next hitter freshman
Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla). Serena smacked a double to left field which scored both Nagel and Palmatier for the first two runs.
Â
Sophomore
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) kept things going with a single to right field which scored Serena. Hussey, who went to second on an error by the right fielder on her single, came in to score when sophomore
Aysia Oliver (Brentwood/Brentwood) doubled to center field.
Â
The Red Dragons added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before ending the game with three runs in the sixth to grab its eight-run lead.
Â
In the three-run sixth, a throwing error by the shortstop allowed senior
Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) to reach base with one out. Sophomore
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) then doubled to put runners in scoring position for Nagel who singled in Koch. Serena once again came through with the big hit driving in Nagel and Palmatier with the final two runs of the inning.
Â
Freshman
Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) picked up her second win of the weekend allowing just three hits and an unearned run striking out two and walking none.
Â
Serena finished the game with a 4-for-4 performance and five runs batted in.
Â
Game 2 – Oneonta 6, Plattsburgh 4
Â
Oneonta jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game 2. Koch led off the game with a double to left field and was then moved to third by a bunt single by Cancelleri. Koch scored the game's first run on a double steal that was aided by an error on the catcher.
Â
Cancelleri then advanced to third on a flyout before scoring on a steal of home on another double steal with Serena going to second base. Serena scored on an RBI single off the bat of junior
Gianna DiGiovanni (Wantagh/Sacred Heart Academy).
