A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta softball team traveled to Ithaca and came up short to the Bombers, 7-6 in a scheduled doubleheader that had the second game protested by Oneonta and upheld, which then was ruled a no contest by the NCAA. The Red Dragons are now 13-6 overall while the Bombers are 8-7 overall.
The Inside Story
Game 1 – Ithaca 7, Oneonta 6
After surrendering three runs to the home team in the first inning, Oneonta would score all its runs in the top of the second to grab a 6-3 advantage.
Three straight hits by freshman
Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla) and sophomores
Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) and
Aysia Oliver (Brentwood/Brentwood) loaded the bases for junior
Gianna DiGiovanni (Wantagh/Sacred Heart Academy) who smacked a double to left center field to drive in Serena and Hussey. After a pop out to second base, senior
Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) singled to drive in another pair of runs. Koch came in to score on a double by
Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) before coming around on an RBI single off the bat of junior
Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park).
Still leading 6-4 heading to the home half of the sixth inning, Ithaca plated three runs to take a 7-6 lead. The Red Dragons went in order in the seventh, as the Bombers secured the win.
Koch, Cancelleri and Serena each had a pair of hits to pace the offense. Sophomore
Lauren Weber (Sayville/Sayville) took the loss in relief of starter
Kathryn Davies (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional).
Game 2 – No contest (protest upheld by NCAA)
