Softball splits with Brockport

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta softball team traveled to Syracuse today to play its makeup doubleheader with Brockport at Onondaga CC and came away with a split.  The Red Dragons won the opener 9-2 but fell in game 2, 6-5.

The Inside Story
Game 1 – Oneonta 9, Brockport 2

Oneonta (21-10, 12-4 SUNYAC) trailed 2-1 entering the second inning before plating a pair to take the lead for good.  With runners in scoring position and one out, senior Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) reached on an infield single that drove in sophomore Aysia Oliver (Brentwood/Brentwood) while advancing sophomore Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue) to third base.  Haley ended up scoring on a passed ball giving the Red Dragons a 3-2 lead.

Oneonta put the game out of reach with five runs in the fourth inning.  Once again Koch came to bat with runners in scoring position and was able to deliver another RBI on a fielder's choice that allowed junior Gianna DiGiovanni (Wantagh/Sacred Heart Academy) to score from third.  Then, with the bases loaded and two outs, freshman Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla) cleared the bases to give Oneonta 7-2 lead.  Serena scored the final run of the inning when classmate Sophia Mangone (Ardsley/Ardsley) doubled to center field.

The Red Dragons added its final run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Koch.

Freshman Angelina Scalere (Ardsley/Ardsley) picked up the win in relief of starter Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville).  Scalere tossed 3-2/3 innings of scoreless relief striking out three.

Game 2 – Brockport 6, Oneonta 5
A three-run seventh inning gave the Golden Eagles the victory in game 2.  Brockport rallied in the final inning scoring the winning run on a fielder's choice.

After spotting Brockport a pair in the first inning, Oneonta scored four runs in the third inning to grab a 4-2 lead.  The Red Dragons made the Golden Eagles pay for a pair of miscues in the field.  The big hit in the inning was a two-out double by sophomore Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East) that drove in Serena and Mangone.

Brockport got one run back in the fourth and Oneonta scored one run in the sixth to set up the seventh inning for the hosts.

Just the Stats
Five players collected two hits in game 1 for Oneonta, as they recorded 12 hits overall.  Serena drove in four runs in the opener while Koch had a pair of RBIs.
