Softball opens SUNYAC play with sweep of Potsdam

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta softball team traveled to Potsdam today to open its SUNYAC schedule and came away with a doubleheader sweep.  They won the first game 10-2 in five innings and followed with a 14-9 victory in the nightcap.  The sweep raises Oneonta's record to 11-5 overall while Potsdam remains winless at 0-9.

The Inside Story
Game 1 – Oneonta 10, Potsdam 2 (5 innings)

A six-run fourth inning for Oneonta broke open a 2-1 game essentially putting the game out of reach for the Bears.

The outburst started with a one-out double down the right field line by sophomore Delaney Haley (Levittown/Division Avenue)Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) was then hit by a pitch followed by a single off the bat of Gianna Cancelleri (Naples, FL/Washingtonville (NY)) to load the bases.  The next batter was junior Marissa Nagel (Averill Park/Averill Park) who cleared the bases with a double to left-center field.  Nagel then scored on a single to center field by senior Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford).

Freshman Julia Serena (White Plains/Valhalla) kept the rally going with a single moving to second base on the throw and advancing Palmatier to third base.  Palmatier then scored on a ground out by sophomore Victoria Hussey (Nesconset/Smithtown East).  Serena scored the final run of the inning after a fielding error by the second baseman allowed classmate Sophia Mangone (Ardsley/Ardsley) to reach.

Oneonta added a pair of runs in the fifth and held Potsdam to a single run in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

Freshman Cadence Brennan (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) picked up her second win of the season in relief throwing three innings and allowing one earned run and three hits while recording three strikeouts.

Game 2 – Oneonta 14, Oneonta 9

In game 2, the Red Dragons recorded 14 runs while collecting 13 hits to complete the sweep of the Bears.

Oneonta scored at least one run in every inning while posting two runs in four innings and four runs in the sixth.

Four players registered at least two hits with sophomore Aysia Oliver (Brentwood/Brentwood) collecting three hits including a double.  She also drove in a pair of runs and scored one run.

In the four-run sixth, Palmatier smacked a double to drive in the first two runs and scored the third run on a passed ball.  The final run came via a throwing error by the shortstop allowing Gianna DiGiovanni (Wantagh/Sacred Heart Academy) to score.

Palmatier finished the game with four runs batted in to go along with her two doubles.  Nagel collected two more hits and scored three runs while DiGiovanni recorded a pair of hits and scored two runs.

Sophomore Marissa Dionisio (Sayville/Sayville) earned the win finishing the last three innings.
