Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania - The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis were locked in a tight battle this afternoon with perennial MAC Conference Champions Wilkes University. The Red Dragon men fell just short of taking the contest losing 5-4.
In doubles play the lone win came from the number two duo of juniors August Lepique and
Jacob Dornsife (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant) when they won in a close tiebreaker set 8-7(7-4) with Dornsife making a spectacular shot on match point. The victory at number two kept the men in striking distance of the Wilkes University Colonels only down 2-1.
Singles saw an exciting match in the top spot as Lepique and his opponent traded high intensity ground strokes with a contest that had to be decided in a super tiebreaker which Lepique won 10-4. Junior
Mason Spottek (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley) won the first set at the number two flight and then dropped the set second to get him into another super tiebreaker that went the Colonels way 10-5. Dornsife was in total command on the third tier on route to his 6-0, 6-2 win. Freshman
Noah Khair (New Delhi, INDIA/National Institute of Open Schooling) played extremely well hitting his shots with confidence and that paid dividends as he took fourth singles dominating 6-0, 6-2. Now the match was deadlocked at 4-4 but at sixth singles sophomore
Yonathan Glattman (Hewlett/Hewlett)Â played valiantly but could not match the arsenal of his opponent and the Red Dragon had to settle for a 5-4 loss.
The men now have a week to rest and they will get back in action with a double header on Monday, April 18th when they host SUNY Oswego at 2 PM followed by Baruch College at 5:00 PM
