Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's lacrosse falters in SUNYAC opener

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team was downed today 8-2 in its SUNYAC opener versus SUNY Geneseo.  The loss for the Red Dragons drops them to 1-7 overall while the Knights move to 3-4 overall.

The Inside Story
The story of the game was really the defensive effort by both squads, as neither team gave up any easy opportunities.  Both goalies were solid combining for 26 saves in the contest including 12 by Oneonta's Luke Mignoli (Long Beach/Long Beach).

The game started with a bang, with each team putting a goal on the scoreboard in the opening 1:07.  Freshman Jimmy Atkinson gave Geneseo the lead at the 14-minute mark before senior Timothy Shanley (West Hempstead/West Hempstead) won the face-off and went straight to goal getting the game tied seven seconds later.

The Knights tallied two more goals including a man-up goal by Atkinson to grab a 3-1 lead heading to the second quarter.

The only goal registered in the second quarter came with just over one minute remaining by senior Sean Byrne of Geneseo.  The Knights took its 4-1 advantage into halftime.

The visitors added three more goals in the third quarter that included a second unassisted goal by Byrne.  Oneonta did score in the quarter when junior David Guest (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) scored his fifth of the season off an assist from classmate Connor Gallagher (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson).

Leading 7-2 entering the final period, the Knights scored the only goal of the stanza for the final.

Just the Stats
Geneseo outshot Oneonta 37-27 in the game while winning nine of 14 face-offs.  The ground balls were even at 22 apiece and the Knights converted 2-of-3 extra-man opportunities.

What's Next
Oneonta will not be in action again until next Saturday afternoon when they will host Brockport on Red Dragon Field beginning at 12pm.
